BIG Flood stamped himself as one of the hottest pups in the country with a blistering triumph in Wednesday night’s Listed Australian Sprint (515m) at Sandown Park.
Beginning well from box one, the Jason Thompson-trained dog was able to push up along the fence and roll to the early lead, kicking away from Don’t Kid Me (box six) around the first turn.
Down the back, Big Flood slipped into top gear, sprinting clear of his opponents in the charge towards the home turn.
In the run to the line there were no dangers to the 34.5 kilogram powerhouse which scored by 3.34 lengths ahead of Don’t Kid Me in a scintillating 29.18.
Who Told Red (box two) rounded out the placings for Rob Britton, meanwhile, champion sprinter Dundee Osprey (box eight) stumbled at the start and never got into the race, finishing nearly 13 lengths behind the winner.
A son of Banjo Boy and Easy Baby, Big Flood is only 20 months of age and has now won eight of his nine starts, with Wednesday’s win taking his career earnings to $42,104.
With a young gun taking out the Australian Sprint, the other main feature of the night, the Listed Maidment Memorial (595m) was won by one of the most consistent and experienced greyhounds in the state.
At start 94, Lithgow Panther was send to the boxes as an $18 shot from box four, with Buck Forty (box three) the even money favourite.
When the lids flew open, Lithgow Panther was the last into stride, with He’s A Boomer (box one), Brolly Bale (box five) an Amigo (box seven) vying for the lead.
Things got tight in the run past the line on the first occasion, with Buck Forty and Lithgow Panther getting nice runs along the fence to slip into second and third respectively.
Off the back, He’s A Boomer started to tire, with Buck Forty checking off his heels when searching for a run.
Lithgow Panther was able to take advantage of the favourite’s misfortune, circling around the outside to take the lead and score by 0.73 lengths over the fast-finishing Zipping Zeus (box eight) in 34.35.
A son of Milldean Panther and Mrs Trickett, Lithgow Panther has now won 33 races with a further 30 minor placings, with his earnings now sitting above $250,000.
