Champion Bitch Xylia Allen Retired As Australian Prizemoney Leader

Xylia Allen, one of the greatest chasers our sport has seen, has been officially retired.

The daughter of and Tayah Bale started on 83 occasions, resulting in the amazing record of 40 victories and 25 minor placings. She has retired as Australia's highest ever prize money earner with $743,730 to her name.

Part of the Wheeler Dynasty, Xylia Allen was bred by and is owned by his wife Jan. Paul Wheeler explained that their star performer was neither on season or injured, but he felt that it was time to bring down the curtain on a truly stellar racing career.

“I went down to Victoria and brought her home last week. It was time to call it a day, she had done enough, more than any other greyhound, and it was time to let her have a life of luxury”, Wheeler said.

Xylia Allen took out four One races throughout her career. Her first at the top level was in the Group One at ; while she also claimed the Group One Peter Mosman Classic, the Group One National Sprint Championship and the Group One Gold Cup at Albion Park.

In addition to her Group Ones, she was also the winner of the Group Two Cup, the Group Three Sandown Shootout and the Group Two McKenna Memorial.

Xylia Allen competed against the best throughout her entire career. The tenacious chaser ran placings in ten Group race finals and was a finalist in a further seven Group events.

Not only did she claim some of the sport's most coveted trophies, Xylia Allen was also a freakishly fast animal. She set seven track records throughout her career at Launceston (515m) 29.09, (570m) 31.934, Traralgon (658m) 33.038, (596m) 33.968, Geelong (680m) 38.908, Wentworth Park (720m) 41.53 and (600m) 33.983.

Looking back at her remarkable career, there is only one word that Wheeler can use to describe his phenomenal chaser.

“Unbelievable. In my lifetime I never thought I would have a greyhound to win almost three quarters of a million dollars. She was outstanding.”

In addition to Xylia Allen, Wheeler revealed that another one of his fantastic bitches has also been brought home.

“I brought Dyna Willow and Xylia Allen home, the two of them had earned around one million dollars on the track together.

“The average race life of a greyhound is probably up to three or a little after. Both these girls had gone past the three and a half mark. They raced longer than others and they did their share.”

Dyna Willow, trained by Steve Collins, won 20 races from 57 starts, earning over $260,000.

Wheeler said both bitches will now have a spell at his property before being mated when they come on season.

“They are in a kennel complex with a whole lot of other females and they get out and run around all day and eat till their hearts content and just basically have a leisurely life.”

“Neither of them are on season at this stage, we just decided to retire them and bring them back and let them have a bit of a rest before they come and season and are mated. Both of them are in tip top condition, the trainers have done an excellent job with them.”

Wheeler said he is considering several sires for both bitches, with a definite decision yet to be made.
