2016 Group 1 Albion Park Gold Cup – free tips & betting preview

CYNDIE’S Magic will be striving to secure her first win at the highest level when she contests this Thursday’s Group 1 Gold Cup (710m) at Albion Park.

The daughter of Magic Sprite and Regal Silver is the $4 favourite with WilliamHill.com.au to end an agonising run of close finishes in big finals, including three runner up placings in the Group 1 Brisbane Cup, the Group 2 Queensland Futurity and the Group 3 Queensland Cup.

The 2016 final will be the second Gold Cup the black bitch has contested throughout her 75 starts career, having finished an unlucky sixth in the 2015 final behind Dzeko.

Heading into this year’s feature, Cyndie’s Magic is in the best form of her career having on her past five starts including a tough win in her heat last week. The front running stayer was uncharacteristically slow out of the traps and had to work hard to find the top, scoring by 0.13 of a length in a BON 42.12.

The main thing going against her on Thursday night is the box draw, with the six far from ideal, however if she can work herself into a nice spot early then they will have to be good to topple her.

Vegas Bound gains a start in the final following the scratching of Kilkee Flex. The daughter of Head Bound and Tina’s Show has run some very nice races of late from tricky draws and she looks ideally positioned in box one to muster along the inside and run a cheeky race on the speed. $5 with Crownbet looks a good price, however she is still yet to win over the track and trip so don’t go rushing into taking shorter odds.

My Boy Brodie extended his great Sydney form with a 42.14 heat win at his first attempt over the track and trip. The son of Radley Bale and Giggling moves into the final high on confidence having won his past four starts in dominant fashion.

Ring The Bell (box eight) is a litter brother to recent Sandown Cup winner Bells Are Ringin’ and he was far from disgraced when running second to Cyndie’s Magic in their heat. The brindle dog has some solid Victorian form to his name and will be aiming to run on late from the pink.

Dublin Bull is rated a big chance to upset the favourite at $7 with Sportsbet after claiming his heat in 42.32 last Thursday. The Jeff Britton-trained greyhound is expected to improve on the clock after having his first look at the track, but will need to avoid finding trouble from box five.

Obi Kenobi is the most inexperienced chaser in the event with just the 11 starts to his name, however the son of Pure Octane and Diamond Series is a young star on the rise and is one for the multiples. Wont be helped by box four, but is definitely one to keep an eye on over the staying trip in the coming months.

Lovelace ran an honest race when runner-up behind Dublin Bull in her heat and she should improve off that run, however box seven is a query and she will need to find a nice spot early.

Abby’s Magic, a litter sister to Cyndie’s Magic, rounds out the field for Bill Elson and is the roughie of the final at $31. Is the likely leader in the race but is not a genuine stayer and will be paddling approaching the home turn.

The Group 1 Albion Park Gold Cup is race eight on the card this Thursday night and is set to jump at 9:12pm.
