2017 Group 2 Richmond Oaks and Derby tips

greyhound tips

THE spotlight will shine on Richmond this Friday night for the running of the Group 2 Richmond Oaks (535m) and the Group 2 Richmond Derby (535m).

Both finals have attracted some star greyhounds from NSW as well as interstate, with each event offering a lucrative $40,000 winner’s cheque.

The favourite to win the Oaks is Victorian bitch Striker Light at $3.20 with Crownbet. Trained by Brett Bravo, the daughter of KC and All won her heat in a quick 30.68 last week and is a sensational speedster, having already won the Group 1 National Futurity at Wentworth Park last month.

Meanwhile, the Derby is headlined by Ritza Lenny at $3.80, with the Mark Gatt-trained greyhound set to jump from box six, looking to extend his record to 20 wins at start 41.

Race six – Richmond Oaks final

In a race packed with early speed, I am going with Up Hill Jill (4) to get the cash. The daughter of Premier Fantasy and Where’s Demonica was far from disgraced when running second behind Striker Light in her heat and is sure to improve off that performance. Last week she had to use up plenty of energy to find the front from box eight and looked slightly uncomfortable at her first look at the track. Definitely capable of improvement although she can’t afford to make mistakes.

Mumma Josie (1) is drawn ideally on the fence and she too should improve after a look at the track. Probably not the fastest greyhound in the race, but she does plenty of things right in her races which puts her right in contention.

Where Are Thou (2) will be last early but has a huge motor and is drawn to get a perfect sit behind the leaders. If she can stay out of trouble and navigate her way through the pack she is a huge chance.

Striker Light (8) is the class greyhound of the race, but box eight can be a tricky draw here at Richmond. With the right run she should win, but the wide box may make it hard to cross in the early stages which she needs to do in order to win.

SUGGESTED BET: WIN bet on Up Hill Jill at $5 with Crownbet

Race eight – Richmond Derby final

Barking Bad (2) is a class act and he is capable of going much better than his 30.57 heat victory last week. Isn’t the best of beginners but is drawn beautifully on the inside and is capable of getting a nice sit behind the early leaders and blowing them away in the closing stages.

El Magnifico (1) is perfectly boxed in the cherry and, although he isn’t blessed with early speed, he has tremendous pace once he hits the ground. If he can hold his spot on the fence in the early stages he should be able to push up into a prominent position and from there he will be right in the race.

Patch Adam (7) is only a young greyhound but he has a heap of potential and recorded a fast 30.41 heat win here last week. Will have to get out well in order to cross this field tonight, but if he does he is in with a huge chance.

Wicked Warrior (5) has a huge engine but is another greyhound which can be risky at box rise. With a clear run he would go close, but box five will make things tough.
