Queen Lauryn’s Sandown Cup Staying Debut Scratched
Queen Lauryn had been drawn to start from box 5 in the 5th heat of the Sandown Cup, heading in to the race on the back of four middle distance runs against weak opposition that saw here snare the Ipswich 630m track record, before failing last start at Albion Park.
Thursday night's run would have seen her tested to the fullest at her first full staying attempt, up against distance hardened stayers such as Kulu Warrior, Octanol, Headley Bale and Genista Reign, with only first from each heat plus that three quickest seconds proceddd
The scratching comes as a blow both for connections and the Sandown Club who also lost another headline creating greyhound, Shadow Boxer from the Sandown Cup Heats due to injury before nominations even closed.
According to Queen Lauryn's trainer Tony Brett, the bitch is unwell after contracting a virus that has been circulating amongst Eastern States racing greyhounds. While not life-threatening the virus is serious enough that she would not be able to compete.
Brett is now looking at starting Queen Lauryn in a staying race toward the end of the Brisbane Winter Carnival, but will need to see how quickly the Queen recovers from her illness.
