Robo Raptor Wins The Lismore Workers Club Cup

Robo Raptor ($3.70) after a slow get away sat on the speed of leader Side Cutter and stormed home to win the Group 2 Lismore Workers Club Cup final (520m). last Thursday night. The race was staged in front of a large crowd at the Colemans Point circuit.

Connections Tony and Fleur Brett were in Melbourne on Thursday night with their pride and joy Queen Lauryn.

On second thoughts they might have been happier had they been at Lismore, particularly after the performance handed in by Robo Raptor in the Cup final.

Fleur owns Robo Raptor (Collision-Macbeth’s Image) and her husband Tony trains him. The victory holds much sentiment for the Bretts.

Dam Macbeth’s Image won the Group 2 WA Oaks in Perth for Tony Brett’s first feature race winner.

Robo Raptor, who came from last at the first turn, rattled home to down Side Cutter ($19.50) with the winner’s kennelmate Banzai Pipeline ($8.90) in third.

Robo Raptor ran a 30.30 winning time after sections of 4.40, 15.10.

Robo Raptor had been third in the Group 2 Ipswich Gold Cup two weeks ago.

Tony and Fleur were in Melbourne to run champion Queen Lauryn in the Group 1 Sapphire Classic at Sandown.

In the absence of Tony and Fleur, Brett gave the job of handling his kennel runners to Josh Allen who roped in his uncle, veteran dog man George Allen as a handler for the dogs at Lismore.

After the placed runners the field finished in the following order 4th Black Attack ($27.90), 5th Azure Allegro ($2.00fav) 6th Kulu Bunyip ($22.20), 7th Emo Appeal ($19.50) and Club Sportz ($8.00).

Robo Raptor is a Black dog whelped January 2007 by Collision from Macbeth’s Image (Just The Best x Shady MacBeth) in his short, but impressive career so far she has raced 15 times for nine wins and three placings and with Thursday night’s first prize of $30,000, he has racked up stake earnings of $44,080.

The Lismore Club has enjoyed 30 years of been sponsored by the Lismore Workers Club, something quite rare these days furthermore the association is set to continue in 2010.

The Cup has been won by some fantastic sprinters over the years, since it was first run in 1968 when won by Bonnie Beaver, the prizemoney was the princely sum of $50. It was worth $500 when John Scholten took over the reins in 1978 that year the cup was won by Deb’s Jewel and rose to $8000 when Rapid Journey won it in 1998.

The Association has gradually increased the prizemoney and this year it will pay $30,000 to the winner and holds Group 2 status The race was first awarded Group status (Group 3) in 2001. The event is open to the best 32 greyhounds nominated and below is a list of Cup winners since 1968.
