Sweet It Is Victorious In 2014 National Distance Final

Sweet It Is has taken out the 2014 National Distance Championship for trainer Darren McDonald. The win tops off a fantastic couple of days for the Cranbourne trainer, who was named trainer of the year.

The daughter of Mogambo – Off Springer was third out of the boxes wearing the seven rug behind a leading Painted Dotty (box one) and Bingle Monelli (box four), with Xylia Allen a little slow to begin in fifth place. It was only a matter of time before Xylia Allen outclassed Painted Dotty and Bingle Monelli, taking the lead and the chance of breaking Miata’s prizemoney record with her at the Solo sign in the back straight. Sweet It Is was at worst in fifth position, not making her run into the race until the dying stages from the outside of the track. In the end it was a battle between the two Victorians who fought it out to the line, with Sweet It Is proving the better stayer on the night by one length in a time of 41.39.

Xylia Allen held onto second place and Miata’s prizemoney record in front Miata’s home crowd, with Queenslander Wag Tail (box two) running on to finish in third place and the WA trained Ash Flash (box three) in fourth.

“I am very very happy with the win, I am just glad to get dogs capable of winning these races.” Trainer Darren McDonald explained.

“I never expect anything, although I was reasonably confident coming into the race. She likes being dictated to and she likes to know where the dogs are in the race.”

The black bitch added her Nationals victory to her list of three group titles including the Group One Association Cup at Wentworth Park and the Group One Sandown Cup.

“All group races are good to win, I can’t compare them one to another.”

Sweet It Is added another $75,000 to her prizemoney, which now stands at over $400,000. She also continued the impressive Perth strike rate for Darren McDonald, with three WA group races for three wins, being the Group One Perth Cup with Keybow, the Group Two Cannington Derby with Tigerlong Amigo and now the Group One National Distance Final.
