2009 Golden Easter Egg Will Rewrite The Record Books

This Saturday night's $150,000 to the winner 2009 Golden Easter Egg is clearly anticipated as the best greyhound race in the past decade, but as well as being a long awaited showdown between champion speedsters and El Galo; this race promises to rewrite the record books.

Miss Elly Mint will be shooting for win number 22 from her past 23 starts, collecting the along the way the Australian TAB Track consecutive win record, plus 3 track records.

El Galo, should he be able to overcome the Miss Elly Mint, will rocket through to Australia's highest stakes earning greyhound. El Galo is currently sitting third in the all time stakes list with $472,590, behind Bogie Leah in second with $488,335. The New South Wales of the late 1990's, Rapid Journey still holds the all time stakes record with $530,995. A win in Saturday night's $150,000 to the winner feature event will make El Galo the first greyhound in Australian history to smash the $600,000 in career prizemoney and take his tally to $622,590. With second prizemoney of $37,500 and third place returning $18,750, El Galo only has to figure in the placings to move in to outright second in the all time stakes list.

Outside what looks like an absolute war between Miss Elly Mint and El Galo, there are high quality greyhounds, trainers and connections who all have an undeniable right to upset the Miss Elly Mint vs El Galo party; and all of whom will find it hard to sleep until after Saturday night.

One of New South Wales premier greyhound trainers, Sid Swain is aiming for his second win in the Golden Easter Egg, having won in 2003 with Cyrus The Virus and running third in only the second ever “Egg” in 1991 with Silver Rocket. Swain will start Group 2 2009 Richmond Derby winner Cool Flight from box 8, the same box Cyrus The Virus started from in 2003.

West Australian trainer Dave Hobby and owners Michael and Michelle Quinsee will be looking to secure the first win for WA in the 19 year history of the Golden Easter Egg. It would also be the first win in “The Egg's” history for an import sire with Joanne Monelli being bred by stud sensation Premier Fantasy from Quinsee's own dam Foolish Girl.

In fact no son or daughter of an imported sire has ever finished closer than third in any running of the Golden Easter Egg. Both greyhounds to have made a were bitches, with. Silver Cassie, a daughter of Curryhill Brute finished 6 lengths from 1994 winner Mancunian Girl, and last year One Tree Hill managed to get the closest of any import sire progeny running third, beaten 2.5 lengths by Blazing Token. If the recent Finalist is successful she will certainly rewrite many of the record books.

Quality youngster Did I Entertain is looking to become the first graduate of the Dapto Leagues Club Maiden to feature on the winner's podium at the Group Golden Easter Egg. The trained youngster has achieved great heights since winning the maiden classic race just over 7 months ago; and add to that an enforced 3 month break from racing to overcome a bout of heat stress, and Did I Entertain's performances to win both heat and semi final are truly remarkable.

is another that has risen from virtual obscurity to stake her claim for Group 1 glory for brothers Rod and Wes Mcdonald. The trained daughter of Collision ~ Dana Betty recently took out the 2009 Bathurst Gold Cup for the McDonald family and the ultra impressive record of 16 wins from 26 starts, winning 12 of her last 16. To demonstrate just how far the youngster has come, 9 of her last 11 runs have been at Wagga, Temora or Bathurst tracks.

Spiral Glory is another greyhound who has hit his straps of late, making the 2009 Group 2 Horsham Cup final in March, after finishing last in the Group 2 Coca Cola SA Derby back in October 2008. Prepared by Dennis Trewin and Tina Womann and owned by Paul Felgate, Spiral Glory will be looking to provide Womann with only her second podium finish after getting within 2.25 lengths of the 2005 Golden Easter Egg when Trewly Special ran third behind . And despite seemingly decades of success as both an owner and a trainer Paul Felgate is yet to be connected with any greyhound to finish in the first 3 placings come final night.

Legendary stalwart, Richie Dean has certainly tasted plenty of success with his own greyhounds as a breeder/owner/trainer but is represented in this years Golden Easter Egg with a greyhound from the Fletcher bloodlines, Radio Star. Amazingly, despite seemingly generations of success for both the Flethcher and Dean families as both breeders, owners and trainers; neither have stood at the presentation dias post race with a placegetter.

For two surnames that have been at the cornerstone of New South Wales greyhound racing for more than 20 years, that statistic alone is staggerring. Radio Star may not be the best greyhound the Dean's and Fletcher's have started at Wentworth Park, but none would begrudge them their moment in Australia's premier race.
