Tricode Flojo Dominates Bob Payne Winter Stake Heats

Queensland visitor Tricode Flojo in the hands of Tricia Fuller stood out from the heats on Monday June 23, winning in a slick 30.01, easily the quickest of the four run offs. Only second to Mountain of Love at Wenty the previous Monday, Tricode Flojo second favourite behind Hanify's Impact in box 1, was never worse than second and beat another interstate visitor Shanlyn Prince (Darren McDonald) by half a length from Ashes Platinum () which is first reserve in the final. The favourite which had a turn in the lead dropped out to finish sixth of the seven runners.

The ultra consistent , second favourite behind Mountain of Love, qualified for another group final at Wenty winning handsomely for trainer Jason Magri in heat 1 in 30.21 from box 5, which it also has to contend with in the final. Soon in the lead Korvette ran out an easy winner by more than 3 lengths from Princess Bale (), with Elusive Thunder (Wal Lugiger) third. The favourite after a slow start ran on for fourth but never threatened.

The second heat saw visitor Dana Gretel (third favourite) win for owner trainer Rodney McDonald in 30.35. Jumping best and then always in the first three, Dana Gretel beat (Carolyn Reinke) which came from the tail of the field by one length with third placegetter and race favourite 's Elite Oriental finishing third. Elite Oriental led at the fourth call, taking longer than normal to take up its usual leading position. Peter Mosman Classic Final winner , favourite from Box 1, could not take advantage of the good draw and after jumping last was never in it to finish sixth.

The third heat saw Earl Anderson's speedy lead and win by a neck in 30.23 from Radio Star (Richard Dean). Reg Kay also contested this heat with Size Can Matter and like Elite Oriental it also ran third – it's second reserve for the final. Reg had Made To Size in Tricode Flojo's heat but had to scratch. After a disappointing seventh in the Peter Mosman Classic Final Merleen bounced back strongly courtesy of brilliant start from box 7 the same box and result as its easy win in a semi of the Peter Mosman – but in the final from box 8 the dog's brilliant early speed was missing. Merleen started at the good odds of 9-1. Equal favourites at 5-2 were Radio Star and Borat, the latter finishing fourth, coming from well back early.

The box draw (below) makes the July 5 final an open affair and as usual box manners and luck in running will play a big part.
