$20Million For Greyhounds Hinges On NSW Inquiry Outcomes

A $20m war chest can be delivered to the NSW greyhound racing industry, provided a wagering tax cut is rubber stamped by the Baird government.

This was just one of a raft of improvements recommended from a 12 month Parliamentary Inquiry into the ailing sport’s fortunes.

The government-appointed Select Committee found clear evidence that greater communication should exist between stake holders and the governing body, GRNSW. To this end, GRNSW has been asked to report back to the Government in six months with an expectation of a greater consultative process.

Similarly, the government remains uneasy about GRNSW’s accountability in the marketplace and seeks a working party’s input to establish the merit of the current administration.

However, separating the froth and bubble from the 18 recommendations, which were tabled to the government, indeed, is proving harder than extracting a wisdom tooth.

Rather than rubber stamp the Select Committee’s extensive wish list, the Government has provided “in principle support” for many of the critical reforms.

Greyhound Inquiry Chairman Robert Borsak was not phased by the government’s reponse.

“They did the best they could, under the circumstances,” Borsak said.

“It was always going to be a tall order but their support to our recommendations are critical to the overall process.”

While industry-wide consultation was a big ticket item to emerge from the Inquiry, the establishment of an Integrity Commissioner also went hand in hand with the Select Committee’s recommendations.

Past Discussion

  1. Complete nonsense, the report released today doesnt not make one mention of tax relief.
The tax relief proposed elsewhere applies to all 3 codes, and 2 of those codes are  winners from the inter-code which the Inquiry looked into, only greyhounds lose from the inter-code.

So unless your going to run a greater nonsense argument that Govt is giving away $80 million in revenue paid by the other 2 codes, just because greyhounds is getting robbed by the inter-code, then i’d suggest you find another argument to present.

Consultation, it sounds a great idea, but it actually involves the sports volunteers giving more unpaid work and donating more time. The Integrity Auditor, we go from sharing the cost with Harness, to now having to pay the lot ourselves, all to deal with on average 3 complaints a year, the majority from 1 family.

All those recommendations involve greyhound people doing more work, being under greater scrutiny or having more money diverted from prizemoney to administration. And then have a look at the swabbing recommendations, it involves going from 5500 swabs to 24000 swabs per year, at least 16 dogs per meeting. How many kennel blocks can deal with that many swabs, how many will have to be re-built at a cost of millions.

More cost, more regulation, more scrutiny, but no extra money from a change to the inter-code.

Correct me if i’m wrong, but wasn’t that the reason for this Inquiry, to get more money from the inter-code?
Our fair share, stop working 20 hours for 13 hours pay, and all the other nonsense GAG carried on with.

It certainly wasn’t to get more money from the tax relief agenda that has been pursued by all 3 codes to bring us into line with what Vic and the other states pay. if it was the other 2 codes would have been involved from day one, and this would have been an Inquiry into all 3 codes, but it wasn’t, and this is just a poor article trying to give credit for tax relief to the imbeciles behind the inquiry.

  3. N.S.W. greyhound racing should be the top State as far as racing goes as usual it’s a sad joke.Since the 50’s when I was a kid the G.B.O.T.A. and N.C.A. have been at war in those days if you raced at an N.C.A. track you couldn’t get a run at a G.B.O.T.A. track and visa-versa.Then there was the farce with the new greyhound stand at W.P. spending millions when patron numbers were falling and having to rebuild the stand when foundations were sinking ,then the G.B.O.T.A. botched the dispute with the trotting admin. and moved out of the best track in Australia Harold Park….what a bunch of clowns ,not to mention the involvement of the M.P.Albert Sloss and out and out criminal who was the conduit for MacPherson and Freeman and sat on the board of the N.C.A……then there was the inquiry where the chief steward was caught on film disposing of swabs and subsequent admission by various trainers that they had been doping their dogs for years.By then I had moved to W.A. and been impressed how that State was running their industry.I have come to the conclusion that the only solution for N.S.W. is to have only one governing body overseen by the Govt. and policed by an independently  appointed watchdog with real teeth with the power to hand out jail terms and seize assets  especially as it’s long been the domain of drug traffickers and their ilk as a place to hide their ill-gotten gains……I know this will go down like a lead balloon but those out there who truly love the sport know it to be true….pip pip!
