Big Cool Ronny Scores His First Staying Win

The well performed scored his first win over the staying journey when he took out the Westlawn Finance distance stake last Friday.

Beginning well from the three alley, he went straight to the lead and with “catch me if you can” tactics his opponents couldn't catch him, He streaked away to win by 3 1/4 lenghts in a handy 35.85.

It was a welcome change of luck for trainer Alan Lang and owner Mick Newstead with Big Cool Ronny racking up his tenth career win. He certainly likes the Casino track, where he has won seven of those races.

Margaret Dwyer always has a handy dog or two in her kennels, and she won the Charcoal Inn maiden with She's Gold who was having her first start. took up the early running, but when she got into a little trouble down the back, She's Gold pounced. Racing clear, she went on to score by 2 1/2 lengths in 23.43. The winner is by Surf Florian from Shy Sal, and the dam produced another winner later in Green Lee. She led throughout after beginning brilliantly for owner Margaret Springer and trainer Brian Stephens. Brian hasn't had a starter for some eight months, but he returned with some vengence producing the daughter of Brett Lee to run the best of the day – 23.15.

Lotto Dude also returned to her best to win the Casino Rural Traders stake in fine fashion. Overcoming the dreaded box five, she powered to the front at the first bend and kicked away. Although Watch The Valley tried hard over the final stages, Lotto Dude held on to win by 1 3/4 lengths in 23.30. Trainer Greg Hancock usually has a small wager, and the odds of 20/1 would have been attractive.

Free For All races are usually clean run affairs with the experienced runners knowing the “ropes.” This was not the case last Friday, when the leaders jammed as they turned for home. Kidatee Alf who had led them in the early stages looked “gone” as they passed him, but when the interference took place he was able to get a second wind and grab the prize. The time of 27.83 for that grade told the story, but luck's a fortune, and the syndicate who race him would have been celebrating.

Somehow who had box eight, got over to the fence and was able to rail through under the leaders to win a fifth grade for Trevor Salmoni in 27.96, whilst earlier, the promising ran the best time over the 484 metres – 27.44. She also railed through near home, and ran home strongly to salute by 3 1/2 lengths for the “in form” Neville Robson.

who has been “crying out” for the longer trip, followed a smart Tweed Heads 520 metre win with a 36.03 win over the 620 metres here. She railed to perfection all of the way for trainer Rob Andrews and owner , and has really hit her “straps.”

In other events, youngster showed good track sense to win the 484 metre maiden in 28.28 for Bob Giltinan; Catch Cahill joined in down the side before winning in 28.18 for Mark Johnston, and Abundia Gem led all of the way to run 23.24 for .

The local industry lost owner, trainer and prolific breeder Bob Thompson after a short battle with illness last Friday morning. Bob trained the 1970 NCA winner , and in recent times the Country Cup winner and good producer, Primrose Bride. The dynasty will continue however with son Trevor now taking over the reins. The Casino club send their condolences to the family.
