BIG Black will be the greyhound to beat in next week’s Group 3 Summer Puppy Classic (520m) at Nowra after a slick heat display on Monday night.
Starting from box six in the opening qualifier of the night, the Donna Campbell-trained dog was only fairly into stride, but managed to barge his way into second spot behind leader Senorita Sparky (box five) around the first turn.
Down the back, the son of El Grand Senor and Time And Money slipped into top gear, racing to the lead and kicking clear.
In the run to the line there was no stopping Big Black which stretched out to score by a widening seven lengths in a fast 29.92.
Like Zeus (box seven) ran on well to grab second and will also progress through to the decider.
Impressively, Campbell also won two of the other three heats with litter mates to Big Black.
In the third qualifier, La Chica Pequena began like a rocket from box seven, mustering pace quickly along the outside and crossing to take the lead.
Once on the bunny it was a case of times and margins, with the 30.5-kilogram bitch defeating Mount Thomas (box two) by two-and-a-half lengths in a handy 30.38.
In the fourth heat, Another Gangsta (box three) was sent to the boxes as the favourite, but the blue brindle couldn’t keep up with Tiempo Dinero (box five) which sliced across around the first turn and booted clear.
In the run to the line, Tiny Terror (box four) was the closest rival, but the pocket rocket couldn’t keep up with her competitor which triumphed by more than eight lengths in 30.10.
Panel Beater (box one) was all the rage in the remaining heat of the night and when the lids flew open the odds-on pop didn’t disappoint.
Pinging straight to the lead, the regally-bred son of Collision and Double Twist never looked in danger, kicking clear to the line to record and eight-and-one-quarter length triumph in a smart 30.04.
Trained by Garry Edwards, who also prepared Panel Beater’s mother – a NSW Greyhound of the Year – the black dog has now won six of his 20 career starts with an additional eight minor placings.
Tracey Bryant’s Heza Gangsta (box eight) ran second after weaving his way through the field.
Watch Big Black (6) winning his heat of the Summer Puppy Classic.
