FANTASTIC Skye looks poised to claim her second bitches-only feature after drawing favourably in box one in Saturday night’s Group 3 Ladies Bracelet (520m) final at Wentworth Park.
The blue bitch, a $2.50 shot with William Hill to salute on the weekend, took out the Group 2 Laurels at Sandown Park last December, and has since gone on to form an imposing record, with 12 wins and 10 minor placings from 25 starts heading into the $25,000 to the winner feature.
Trained by Jason Fletcher, the 25 kilogram pocket rocket qualified for the final with a determined victory in her heat, pushing up along the fence in the early stages and sprinting clear to score in a nippy 29.91 over Zipping Lilly.
“She used the box well in her heat last week – she is really starting to become a better race dog with every start,” Fletcher told Australian Racing Greyhound.
“I was happy with her time as the track was very heavy last week so I think her win was probably a 29.70 run on a normal track.
“She is really going well – she hasn’t missed a place in her last 15 starts which have all been against group and FFA city class company.
“She is a good little dog – she puts herself into the races – I wish I had a few more like her.”
The daughter of Goodesy and super producer Light Fantastic will meet a quality field for this week’s final including the likes of Good Odds Angel (box three), Zipping Lilly (box seven) and recent Dubbo Gold Cup winner All A Blaze (box six).
Despite facing some classy opponents, Fletcher remains confident his bonny bitch will perform well off box one.
“She likes to be drawn on the rail and she hadn’t raced for three weeks leading into the heats – we gave her a bit of a quiet lead in as she has got a couple of big weeks coming up – so she should improve this week and every week for the next few runs.
“I am hopeful she can come out well and push up and use box one to her advantage.
“I’m not too worried about any of the other dogs in particular, I am more worried about Skye using the box.”
Following her run on Saturday, a win in which would elevate her career earnings above $125,000, Fantastic Skye will head to Melbourne in pursuit of further riches.
“All going well this weekend she will line up to take her place at Sandown next Thursday in a heat of the [Group 1] Sapphire Crown.
“At this stage I am yet to decide whether I will make the trip down myself or if I will send her down to someone else for the series, but either way she will be there.
“She has run 29.35 at Sandown Park – but I think she is a better bitch now and I think she will be capable of going a bit faster.”
The Group 3 Ladies Bracelet is race eight at Wentworth Park on Saturday night and is set to jump at 9:57pm.
