The eight finalists for the Goulburn Workers Club Cup final on Sunday have been decided. A couple of the heats were taken out by outsiders and the majority of winners came from Box 8. The fastest qualifier was Victorian Greysynd Jet for Paul Anderton.
The first heat was taken out by outsider Meditate (Box 8). Black Daddy (Box 6) secured second place, while the favourite, Veetee Express (Box 1), rounded out the placings. The form of the winner had been scratchy prior to the race. When the lids opened, Meditate and Black Daddy were the best away and were vying for the lead into the bend, with Mediate stuck outside of Black Daddy. Meditate managed to get the better of Black Daddy while negotiating the bend, and was first past the post in 25.82. Black Daddy finished up one length behind the winner and has made it through to Sunday’s final.
Box 8 proved a winner again in the second heat when the talented Irinka Luca snared victory ahead of race favourite Knocka’s Return (Box 1) and Calamity Trigger (Box 5). It was a closely contested finish to the race, with the final margins a head by a head. Spirited Journey (Box 6) and Booze Hound (Box 4) were best away with Dana Lara (Box 7) also hunting up on the outside. Irinka Luca (Box 8) injected himself into the race approaching the first turn and had the room to move up along the outside. Knocka’s Return (Box 1) didn’t begin and failed to show any early zip and was back near last. In the run up the long Goulburn home straight, Irinka Luca edged to the front with Knocka’s Return eating up the metres quickly along the rail to rush into second. Calamity Trigger finished strongly for third with the final race time semaphored as 26.19.
You Name Me (Box 4) was sent to the boxes as a $19.00 chance in heat three and ended up with the win. Rock Pepper (Box 5) led the race while Lil Miss Sparkle (Box 1) pushed up with Lachlan Bomber (Box 7) also chiming in to make it a line of three into the bend. Entering the turn, You Name Me charged through to take the lead and gave the field a cold, romping away to a 5 1/2 length win in 25.89. Lachlan Bomber (Box 7) did well to just slip into second spot. He was bouncing off Lil Miss Sparkle in the home straight and managed to regain his composure to run down Rock Pepper on the line.
Heat four had the fastest heat winner and resulted in another winner from Box 8. Greysynd Jet (Box 8) was only fairly away at box rise but was able to muster herself into third position early. Vee String (Box 5) flew the lids and pinched an early break on the field. Magic Lair (Box 1) was also well away and Greysynd Jet had to sit outside Magic Lair down the back. Greysynd Jet soon put paid to Magic Lair and went in pursuit of Vee String. She trailed Vee String into the home straight and chipped away to overtake the leader and emerge victorious by 2 1/2 lengths. Charlm Warrior unleashed a powerful finish to come from midfield to chase down Vee String and Magic Lair to book a spot in the final. Vee String failed to run a place with Magic Lair finishing up in third and securing a place as first reserve for the final.
