Holloway hoping for a touch of magic in Vic Peters semi-final

MAGIC Spring will be aiming to bounce back from a recent form slump when he contests the fourth and final semi of the Group 1 Vic Peters Classic at Wentworth Park this Saturday night.

Trained by Noelene Holloway, the son of Spring Gun and super producer Fascinate Marina won eight of his first 12 starts at headquarters, however he is yet to win in his last four attempts over the 520 metre trip.

The speedster, currently $3.90 to win his semi with William Hill, led for the majority of his heat last week, before tiring in the closing stages when finishing two-and-one-quarter-lengths third behind Black Bear Lee and Blazin’ Bomber.

Magic Spring’s heat effort was his second race back from a freshen up, with Holloway believing that he will strip fitter for the run heading into Saturday’s event.

“There have been a few runs there recently where he wasn’t going very well, but he had a few niggling little injuries and I think they were putting him off,” Holloway said.

“He had a little bit of time off, just a couple of weeks, and now he is coming back nicely and I am hoping to see an even better performance from him this week.

“He probably hadn’t had enough running going into his heat, but after that run and through stepping up his workload a bit this week I am hoping that he will be a bit stronger at the finish on Saturday night.”

The black dog, which holds a 29.86 personal best at Wentworth Park, will come up against a handy field including Nangar Flame ($3.80), Black Bear Lee ($5.00) and Zipping Harry ($8.00), but Holloway is confident he has the talent to be competitive, despite drawing awkwardly in box five.

“I am hoping that being on the front line will work in his favour as he will have a bit longer to get down and settle in the boxes.

“I think he definitely has the speed to lead, but you just don’t know what they are going to do when they jump.

“I am hoping he can get out and that he can get going early because he is feeling great at the moment and I think he can get back down to his best.”

Saturday is set to be a big night for the family, with Magic Spring’s litter brother Big Tee Rex looking a live chance in the first qualifier.

The 38 kilogram powerhouse, which equalled the track record at Maitland three starts ago, is trained by Troy MacDonald – the husband of Holloway’s niece, Natalie.

Big Tee Rex is $3.50 with Bet365 to take out his semi-final from box two following on from his emphatic 29.79 heat victory last Saturday. His biggest threats in the event appear to be Camden Valleyway ($3.50) and Good Odds Ocker ($7.00).

The second semi-final appears to be at the mercy of Kihael Kaluna from box three, a winner of his heat in a slick 29.83. Rated a $2.80 shot, he comes up against the likes of Paloma Lago ($10) and Good Odds Angel ($3.00), the winner of this year’s Group 3 Laurie Healion Maiden Memorial at The Gardens.

Victorian raider Blazin’ Bomber is the $1.75 favourite in the third heat and will have derived great benefit from his second placing behind Black Bear Lee last week. The son of Kinloch Brae and Absolute Stunna will have to produce his best to score, with talented NSW chaser No Donuts also in contention from box four.

First and second from each semi-final will progress through to the $75,000-to-the-winner feature, to be run at Wentworth Park on October 31, 2015.
