Industry’s guarantees four commitments to Premier at meeting

THE New South Wales greyhound industry is continuing its fight for survival following a meeting with Premier and Deputy Premier Troy Grant on Tuesday morning.

Representing the industry was NSW Greyhound Breeders Owners and Trainers Association () CEO , who is also the head of the NSW Greyhound Racing Industry .

At the meeting the Alliance made four guarantees of action to the Government and community as a means of demonstrating the industry's unwavering commitment to .

“We appreciate the Premier listening to our plan for the future this morning,” Scott said.

“We are committed to a plan that will ensure we meet the expectations of the community and can still operate a viable and sustainable industry.”

The four guarantees are as follows:

– A total life cycle management for all greyhounds born into the industry, including every greyhound which is unable to race as well as retired dogs.

– A controlled breeding program which would immediately limit the amount of greyhounds being bred for racing within NSW to 2000 annually.

– A zero tolerance attitude towards animal cruelty which would result in life time bans for any participants found guilty of acts such as .

– Providing strict standards to ensure the safest racing environment as a means of eliminating avoidable injury.

Each of the four guarantees came with a detailed action plan to demonstrate to the Government how the industry expects to meet each of the commitments.

The plans include positive initiatives such as breeding quotas, new grading systems for racing greyhounds, additional funding for adoption programs and a new industry , which would be enforceable by a and supervisory structure.

Scott said the guarantees made by the Alliance demonstrate a response to some of the Government and community's main concerns for the sport of greyhound racing.

“Important to the community is the fact that our plan for the future means that every greyhound bred will live out a full and natural life whether as a racing dog, adopted as a family pet, or as the responsibility of its owner or the industry,” Scott said.

“We are confident that we can meet these guarantees. We have thoroughly researched the issues. The modelling that we have done, plus case studies from other states and overseas, demonstrates that this is all viable and achievable.”

Scott said Baird saw the significant impact his decision is going to have on the state and reiterated that the Alliance is to work with the Premier on reforming the industry.

“I believe the Premier showed an understanding of the impact of his decision and we are happy to work with him further to demonstrate the viability of our industry.

“We hope he agrees to work with us as we are confident we have a viable industry inclusive of the guarantees we presented to him today.

“We are open to independent credible modelling to further check our future capability inclusive of these strong reforms and infrastructure upgrades.

“We are just asking for a fair go and a chance to demonstrate that we can change.”

simple, sit down solution one would believe. I just cannot get my head around even thinking that BAIRD was understanding. if he was,why are we in this mess now? oh,that’s right,TROY GRANT suggested,in no uncertain terms,THAT WE HAVE OURSELVES TO BLAME BY SIGNIING THAT STUPID 100 YEAR DEAL. OK, apart from that, what makes us think by sitting across a table with a guy like BAIRD,and his record of dislike of the industry, that we can get hope from that? I like BRENTON SCOTT and his mannerism, but don’t be sucked in mate by there CREEPY COLGATE SMILES…….do what you have to mate, but always… Read more »

dogem53  Denial of request for case to be put forward- standard procedure the Australian legal system has never had urgency at it’s core. The people involved are paid by the hour. Similarly protecting a retired high court judge- standard procedure for a supreme court judge to protect a judge who retired or not was a High Court Judge.

Deborah555 dogem53 I don’t read much into that of  being Denied ,as you said its standard procedure in the Supreme Court. As for Scott’s meeting  with Baird and Grant,   this  could be a major shift in attitude by them we hope  . We live in hope ! we must  keep the heat on, its matter of controlling the heat?.

dogem53  PS The validity of a legal decision very much depends upon the level of the court making it. A supreme court judge would not question a decision about a judgement made at a higher level and even though this is about a special commission McHugh is still a respected Juror.

dogem53 I totally  agree. This  Scott  who parades as the leader of owners and breeders here in NSW believed  at the time that 100 year deal was a good one and now he is telling the Government that 2000 dogs will keep the industry ticking over here in NSW, sorry  Mr Scott you and your crew are selling us short again ,enough is enough,  tender your  resignation and piss off  home to South Australia

Let’s hope that this suggested remedy is also the model for horses.

Don’t think that will ever happen though considering the euthanasia numbers involved for them.

And what would our dogs be fed on.?

Their birth to death if the dogs model was used would be an absolute nightmare.

Yet that is ours to implement.

My belief the Greyhounds future problem will be breeding enough dogs to supply the racing industry.

The agreement promised will inhibit breeding and the motivation to breed considering the huge costs and the number of times a bitch can whelp litters.

Deborah555 dogem53 Correct on all counts Deborah, see below for a few details

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-08-09/greyhound-racing-ban-report-contained-factual-errors-court-told/7703436

Note that the debate on the issue commences tomorrow in the Legislative Council and if passed will be heard by the legislative assembly next month.

Court returns 29th September 2016.

The GBOTA is doing exactly what the members in general meeting instructed them to do that is to spend an appropriate amount of reserves on a rebut of the special commission if necessary.

John Tracey Deborah555 dogem53  Yes I am not sure why you would criticise McHugh at all (if they have actually done that) he made 80 recommendations 79 of which were about a sustainable future. While he may have been the respectable figurehead Rushton was apparently running the show and his behaviour  was well outrageous to say the least even his opening statement would be enough to make the report invalid. I notice he is very absent as well, hiding? while a respected juror cops the criticism.

I will put your item on the GRCA (Country Clubs) conference agenda as a suggested item. dogem53 Ring up the GBOTA and get put on the alliance notification list and you can follow the events. So you always avoid injunctions like the plague. Other reason is what are you stopping anyway racing continue to JULY 2017 anyway. Mr Scott, Isaw your interview on The Project tonight. Your message is not credible, andneither are you. Why shouldthe public believe that the Greyhound Industry has any commitment to animalwelfare? You say thatyou can develop a total life cycle management plan for every Greyhound. If you cando this now, why didn’t you do this before? The onlyreason that the Greyhound industry has any focus on addressing animal crueltyand animal welfare issues now, is because they have no choice. This is theIndustry’s last ditch effort to save itself. The Greyhound industry culturedoes not support, and probably would not accommodate the plan… Read more »
