It’s Time To Paint The Town Blue

When you hear the word cancer, it sends an instant shudder down your spine, as every person has been affected in some way by this horrible disease that takes the lives of so many loved ones. Almost 125,000 people in Australia will be diagnosed with cancer this year, an alarming statistic that reinforces our number one mission to reduce this figure through prevention and research.

During September, Blue will become the greyhound communities new favourite colour as Hunter Valley trainer Shane Hill, is embarking on a mission to unite everyone in the fight against mens cancer. It's important to understanding that over 22,000 Australian men die from cancer very year, a tragic occurrence that must be stopped.

‘Cancer has affected my family when I lost my cousin back when we were young. This is a way for me to give back and help out' said Hill.

Despite all the negative criticism and slandering the greyhound racing world is subjected too, moments like these truly show what amazing people we have, that will go to extreme lengths in helping those in need.

The response to Shane's kind gesture has been overwhelming, with an already impressive list of prizes and experiences that several lucky winners will take away with them when the raffle is drawn at Gardens during September.

‘Without the help of some many kind-hearted people, none of this would be possible' said Hill, whose courage and initiative to ignite this kind of awareness, is truly inspiring and someone who we can all look up to.

Just some of the prizes that have been confirmed so far include; a Sunday morning experience at Gai Waterhouse's exclusive stables (kindly donated by TomWaterhouse.com), a restaurant and stable experience to meet the likes of Peter Robl (kindly donated by Terry Mullens), a straw to , kindly donated by Oaks Road Lodge ( and Edwin Kingswell), a Don't Knocka Him straw, kindly donated by , a four-week break in course at renowned education centre Vee McGee and a gift vouchers from two of Australia's leading greyhound product suppliers; Greyhound Products Direct and Tara Greyhounds.

Not only are these some of the most mouth-watering prizes any racing enthusiast could only dream of winning, all proceeds will be going towards Blue September.

This is particularly close to my heart, as I lost the one man back in 2001 who introduced me to the world of greyhound racing. Every time I step onto the race track, my beloved grandfather is there with me and I want to make sure that future generations don't experience the suffering and grief that he went through in his battle with cancer.

No matter what, we can all make a difference and I'm already confident this cause will have an overwhelming response. If there's one certainty in life, we can always rely on our good friends in the greatest sport of all; greyhound racing.
