Kihael Kaluna’s Magical Maiden Performance

LIDSDALE trainer Kim Hyde returned to the winner’s circle at Wentworth Park in style on Sunday night when exciting youngster Kihael Kaluna made his successful racetrack debut in a heat of the Group 3 Magic Maiden series.

Exiting from box one in the first of 11 heats, the son of Oaks Road and She’s The Goodes was flawless from start to finish and recorded a blistering time of 29.69 over the 520-metre trip.

Kihael Kaluna was all the rage with punters at $1.40 after two impressive performance trials at Bathurst over 450m. The 28kg chaser annihilated his opposition by a combined margin of 27.75 lengths in those two runs, with a personal best time of 25.61. Sunday night’s performance was no different, scoring by 13.25 lengths and stamping his authority as a genuine contender to take out the $25,000-to-the-winner final.

Reserve runner Black Bear Lee gained a start in heat ten and didn’t disappoint trainer Ruth Matic, leading all the way in a fast time of 29.81. Jumping from box six, the son of Brett Lee and Paua Of Love quickly sped to the lead at the first turn, scoring by 3.75 lengths over second placegetter Cosmic Shower which was gallant in defeat. Black Bear Lee failed to finish at his only prior race start at Bulli back in December of last year and appears to have found his rhythm early in this series.

The 11th and final heat delivered another boom youngster in Down Every Road, debuting for Melinda Finn, who also took out heat five with the well-bred Winsome Amanda. Stepping well from box four, Down Every Road, a son of World Title and Miss Bel Air, led throughout in a fast time of 29.97 after starting at just $1.80 with punters following on from a sizzling 26.36 performance trial at Bulli over 472-metres three weeks ago.
