The glamour girl of New South Wales greyhound racing, and Australian TAB tracks consecutive win record holder, Miss Elly Mint made her triumphant return to greyhound racing yesterday after a short injury enforced let-up.
Miss Elly Mint sustained a small shoulder muscle injury when running for win number 17 in a row at Wentworth Park, but came back to racing last night at The Gardens in sensational fashion, running a new track record for the 431m distance.
With The Gardens track record previously standing at 23.54 to the way of Run Brioney set back on the 29th March 2008, Miss Elly Mint’s connections would’ve just been happy to see her secure a victory a her first run back and didn’t have track records on their mind.
But Miss Elly Mint had other ideas, sitting in box 6 in Heat 1 of Then Novacastrian, a rich short course heat and final at The Gardens, Miss Elly Mint looked a graded certainty, and starting at the luxury odds of $1.40 in New South Wales and $1.57,best corporate bookmaker price.
Miss Elly Mint began well enough from box 6 but looked to have a race on her hands with the capable Fuel Tank kicking up on her inside. After a few anxious moments for her supporters Miss Elly Mint was able to shake off Fuel Tank and roar clear down the back straight running an exceptional 11.84 first section.
From there, Miss Elly Mint put her upcoming 2009 Group 1 Golden Easter Egg rivals on notice, extending her lead and winning comfortably by 7.5 lengths.
The Robert Smith trained and Ray Watson owned daughter of Elite State ~ Indigo Mint covered the 431 metres so effortlessly, that few believed the time when it came up, 23.46.
Miss Elly Mint had just smashed the old track record by .08 of a second or about a length and a quarter.
Given she had to overcome a little bump early and the bad box, there is no doubt that with a better box in next weeks final of The Novacastrian, she’ll give the record another tilt.
Last night’s run was the first ran back in preparation for campaign to win the 2009 Group 1 Golden Easter Egg at Wentworth, which starts in just over a fortnight at Wentworth Park on Saturday 28th March 2009.
Miss Elly Mint’s race record now stands at 60 starts for 39 wins and 11 placings for total career prizemoney of $148,440.
