VICTORIAN chaser Quasi Bale was simply brilliant in the final of the Group 2 Richmond Derby on Friday night, with trainer Mark Delbridge and owner Paul Wheeler now $40,000 richer.
The son of Bekim Bale and Amanda Bale finished second in his heat last week behind Group 1 winner Bessy Boo in a fast time of 30.61, however, starting from box four in the final at the huge odds of $19.00, many people wrote off his chances with so much class engaged.
But, there was no doubting this greyhounds ability at the finish, rounding up his rivals in a blistering time of 30.22.
Jumping well from the middle alley, the 31kg chaser sat behind early leaders No Donuts ($3.40 favourite) and Winsome Mission ($4.70) which both exploded away from boxes two and five respectively.
Heading into the back straight, Quasi Bale began to make a move along the rails, taking the lead from No Donuts halfway around the home turn before storming clear to score by four-and-three-quarter lengths.
A brave No Donuts finished second and Zipping Sonny ($11.60) made up good ground, finishing half a length away in third position.
What made this victory even more impressive was a sensational run home time of 14.77, demonstrating the amazing strength this greyhound possesses.
Quasi Bale was having just his second start at the Richmond circuit and came into the event with good form at Sandown Park over 595m, clocking a personal best time of 33.89 back in January. Some of his other best times include 29.33 at Sandown over 515m, 34.39 over 600m at The Meadows and 32.79 over 570m at Horsham.
The Richmond Derby win was the 12th of his career from start number 24, taking his prize money total to an impressive $72,825.
