Terry Lockhart Disqualified For 3 Months For Caffeine Positive In New South Wales

Greyhound have concluded an inquiry into analysts' reports that the urine sample taken from Not Far after that greyhound won Race 8, the ‘ Stake' conducted by the GBOTA at on 27th September 2011 contained the , , and Theobromine.

Evidence was taken from Trainer Terry Lockhart and Dr Adam Cawley the Science Manager of the Australian Racing Forensic Laboratory. Written evidence was entered from the Australian Racing Forensic Laboratory, Racing Chemistry Chem. Centre (WA), ARFL Senior Veterinarian Dr Craig Suann and consultant Veterinarian Dr Jack Somerville.

Mr Lockhart was found guilty to a charge under Greyhound Racing Rule 83 (2) (a) in that he presented Not Far for the race in question not free of a prohibited substance as the urine sample taken from the greyhound was found to contain Caffeine, Theophylline, Paraxanthine and Theobromine.

After considering submissions on penalty Mr Lockhart was suspended for a period of three months and fined $1000 in lieu of a greater period of suspension or disqualification being issued.

In determining the penalty Stewards took into consideration Mr Lockhart's unblemished record in relation to this Rule over a lengthy 37 year involvement in the industry, his personal circumstances which include that Mr Lockhart is the proprietor of a commercial rearing property in the Northern Rivers, the nature of the substance involved which included some negligence displayed on the part of Mr Lockhart by feeding his greyhound with a herbal product named B.Hip that contained Guarana (a product that contains Caffeine), the evidence from Dr Cawley that the level of the prohibited substance found in this sample was low and in all likelihood consistent with the alleged mode of provided by Mr Lockhart, previous penalties given to other persons in relation to the same Rule, and the effects that such have on the image of greyhound racing.
