Four Of NZ’s Best Greyhounds Go Head To Head

Four top greyhounds will battle it out in the $60,000 New Zealand Shootout race at Manukau Stadium on Thursday night.

Greyhound Racing New Zealand () Racing Manager Ross Gove says the race is unique as it features only four dogs and is ‘winner takes all'.

“These are four of the best dogs in the country, invited by a panel of experts because they are quality animals, are racing really well at present and should all be suited to the four-dog format. The Shootout is the only New Zealand race that doesn't have a full field of eight dogs.”

He says the owners/trainers of the invited dogs put up a $5000 entry fee for each dog, GRNZ subsidises the stake to the tune of $40,000 and the winner takes the entire $60,000. There is no stake for the second or third place getters.

“This is the fifth time the race has been run, and each year it attracts strong on- and off-course interest. Having just a four-dog field really puts the focus on individual performance, and punters have a 25 percent chance of backing the winner.”

The race is set for 8.24pm on Thursday 27 November.

GRNZ celebrated its Centenary last month, and Ross Gove says interest in the sport is strong as it heads into its next 100 years.

“This has been a huge year for , as the sport continues to grow in attendance and betting interest. Highlights over summer include the $31,000 Wellington Cup at Wanganui's Raceway on 23 January and the $120,000 Auckland Cup at Manukau Stadium on 5 March.”
