NSW greyhound participants invited to attend meeting in Newcastle

THE greyhound racing industry has been left devastated as the shock announcement came today (Thursday) that the NSW State Government will be banning the sport as of July 2017.

Now, one participant is asking others to band together to fight the decision announced by NSW Premier , with all those with an interest or investment in the sport invited to attend a meeting at Warners Bay Club on Sunday July 10, 2016, at 1pm.

Ryan Freedman, the manager at Warners Bay Sports Club, is also a greyhound trainer and is aiming about getting all participants on the same page as to what the future involves.

“The point of the meeting is to get all participants involved in greyhound racing in the Hunter and Central Coast district on the same page,” Freedman said.

“We need to get a petition to say we oppose the ban and we need to make sure everyone is on the same page moving forward which is something which hasn't happened previously.

“We need everyone on the one side doing the right thing and we want to ensure there is no minority who will run off and do something stupid and makes everyone else look bad.”

Freedman believes the main option for participants is to acquire the assistance of a QC to battle the ruling.

“Our only way out of this could be to challenge the State Government's decision in the Supreme Court, but to we would need legal representation from a QC,” he said.

“If that's the case and we go down that road we would need assistance from the in funding that as well as all other participants.

“We can't change the decision, but we can try to establish doubt in the mind of the decision and get them to reserve it that way.”

It is hoped that there will be enough support at the meeting to campaign the same petition across the state, with further consultation then needed to branch out to all participants.

Australian Racing Greyhound has also an online petition those wishing to throw their support behind overturning the ban.

“No different to other sports.” Is that your argument? What other sports cause the killing of 100 animals a week for over a decade, and then systematically hide it? I’m yet to hear a competent, rational argument from the Greyhound industry. Your position is generally ‘But we’ve been doing it for generations.’ and ‘But we’ll lose our livelihoods.’ – perhaps if the industry had taken seriously the widespread (yes, one in five trainers is widespread) live-baiting and prolific slaughter of animals you might have kept your jobs.

there should be a ban across all three codes”  The only sensible thing written in that article, and even then I had to selectively lift it out of a misguided statement.

Katherine – how do you respond to the Special Commission of Enquiry’s findings; “such is the culture of the industry and some of its leaders that it is no longer, if it ever was, entitled to the trust of the community.” ‘After a long investigation, they have determined that the overwhelming cost, time and magnitude of altering the culture of the industry would be best tackled by outright banning greyhound races. It’s nothing new, within the past 10yrs, greyhound racing around the world has halved as evidence of systemic abuse has been uncovered. In the US alone, the industry has been… Read more »

impact sopitted Calm down Mr Capital letters, you have no idea what sopitted’s views on all the things you mention are.  Why are you assuming that because someone is happy to see greyhound racing shutdown that they are ok with all the other things you mention?  I’m not ok with any of those things.  Animal should be harmed as a matter of necessity, not for entertainment, profit, food or sport. Control of invasive species is probably the most difficult one, because you may be harming an animal to prevent it harming another animal, or harming the ecosystem.  Every case needs to… Read more »

impact sopitted Nice use of capitals, mate. You mention a long list of animals bred for consumption, like sheep, chickens and ducks. These are eaten, so we can survive. Yes, it does make it okay. You could argue that we should all be vegetarians, but that’s a pretty long bow to draw. We eat them to survive – you make them race around a track so you can win money… do you understand the difference? RSPCA and Councils kill thousands of rabbits and foxes to protect natural fauna. You kill dogs because they don’t run fast enough… do you understand the… Read more »

sopitted impact To be fair, in this day and age in most parts of the world (certainly Australia) animals aren’t farmed so we can survive.  They are farmed because we like the taste of meat, eggs and dairy products.  We don’t need it to survive, and we certainly don’t need cruel high intensity farms.  Australians eats more meat than any other population in the world, because we’ve come to view eating cheap meat 3 times a day as some kind of basic human right, or even most stupid, that it’s the “Australian” way.   That expectation drives farming to be more… Read more »
