Tony Brett continued his stranglehold on the Group One Winter Carnival Cup when Flash Reality (8) put in a dashing display to land the $75,000 to-the-winner event at Albion Park on Thursday night.
The win makes it four straight Winter Carnival Cups for Brett, who also won the race with Glen Gallon (2013 and 2012) and Iso Octane (2011).
The Marlene Ellis owned son of Premier Fantasy and Orara Flash (Bond – Sweet Elite) ran a new race record of 29.71 en route to his 1 1/4 length win.
After leaving outside box in third place, Flash Reality quickly mustered up to second and was challenging the speedy Australian Cup winner Buckle Wes (4). By the time the pair had raced through the catching pen the first time it was Flash Reality who wrested the ascendancy away from the early leader.
The 34kg black dog quickly opened up a two length break down the back and looked as though the race was his for the keeping, but Buckle Up Wes chased tenaciously and railed up to be within a length of Flash Reality as they rounded the turn into the home straight.
Flash Reality dug deep in the run home and the Queensland Derby winner staved of his much more accomplished competitor to land his second Group race at just his 14th start.
Buckle Up Wes ran a gallant second while Love Kills (3) finished third.
Of the beaten brigade, short-priced favourite Awesome Project (1) was away slowly and sixth past the post the first time where he hooked out wide. He continued to race wide and could only manage to get to fourth which is where he stayed.
Yogi Blue (7) was third away and caught deep for most of the event, he found the trip telling in the home straight and finished fifth. Benarkin (5) was slowly away as expected and still last into the home straight before running on for sixth.
Winged Elite (6) was last to leave the boxes and only made it as close as sixth mid-race before finishing seventh. Gumlow Star (2) left the boxes well but could not match motors with the big guns early and found herself crowded on the fence, she was never in the hunt and finished in last place.
The win was the 31-month-old Flash Reality’s eighth from just 14 starts and takes his career earnings past $140,000.
