Classy Ace Claims Port Augusta Cup
Anyone knows that good breeding will always come to the fore. And for Booleroo Centre greyhound trainer Don Fiebig, that was certainly the case when his top dog Classy Ace took out the prestigious Port Augusta City Council Cup on Saturday.
Despite being warned by the previous owner the dog could not race over 500 metres, Don said with some time and a careful training regime, his charge took on a field of tough contenders to nab the elusive cup.
With a performance that lived up to his kennel name of Ace, the two and a half year-old raced the 503-metre journey in just 28.70 seconds, beating some of Adelaide's top class dogs.
Don bought Ace from Melbourne paying $3000 in the belief this dog was something special.
“I have had him for about four and a half months now,” the delighted trainer said.
“He has excellent breeding and is out of Primo Uno, a pretty good bloodline.
“I put plenty of time into him and trained him the way I thought he should be trained.”
While Don, who has trained greyhounds for 18 years and has five dogs in work currently, said he has owned previous cup winners, but it was the first time a dog he had trained had taken out the prize.
“I was rapt,” he said. “It was a great thrill to win the cup and I am delighted with his performance.”
With Ace yet to be beaten at Port Augusta in four starts, Don could be looking at collecting plenty more cups with this classy canine.
And Ace looked pretty pumped as well in his blue satin rug because he knew he had done something very special.
