GRSA Close The Door On Murray Bridge Straight Track
The Murray Bridge Greyhound Racing Club has renewed its call for straight track racing to be officially sanctioned in the city.
But, according to Greyhound Racing SA the Murray Bridge track was not part of its plans.
MBGRC president Ron Burns said his club had the facilities and profile to stage licensed straight track races.
“We've already had greyhound people from interstate that have said our track was one of the best tracks in Australia,” he said.
“People from all over Australia are prepared to bring their dogs down.”
Mr Burns said the track was only used for trials but could easily connect to TAB and had all of the facilities required to stage official race meets.
He said the clubroom was also of a high enough standard to hold race meetings and there was the potential for the future development of a round track.
However, Greyhound Racing SA has told MBGRC it is not part of its straight track racing plans.
Chief executive officer Peter Ali said the body was focusing on merging straight track racing and round track racing at the Virginia course.
“There is no doubt the Murray Bridge track is good and Ron and his committee are to be congratulated,” he said.
“But the feedback the board has received is it would be better to pursue a merger at Virginia.”
Mr Ali would not rule out meets in Murray Bridge in the future but said for the time being, GRSA would not be looking to start racing in the city.
