Mt Gambier Greyhounds Set To Secure Sunday Morning TAB & Sky Coverage

The Mount Gambier Greyhound Club (MGGC) is on the verge of an exciting new era that could include exposure.

The recent introduction of extra television coverage by and the TAB has opened the door for the MGGC to become heavily involved.

Although the final contract is yet to be signed with Sky Channel, MGGC secretary/treasurer Barry Shepheard said earlier this week: “We are 99% sure it will happen and everything is in motion for it to occur.”

Since its inception back in the late 1970s, the MGGC has conducted meetings on Saturday afternoons and the occasional Monday of a long weekend at its Tara Raceway, firstly at Glenburnie racecourse and later at its Lake Terrace East complex.

With now having extra channels to cover gallops, harness and greyhound racing, an extra 26 meetings are now available in South Australia for greyhound meetings, albeit on Sunday mornings.

If accepted, the MGGC would shift from its regular Saturday afternoon non-TAB timeslot.

The Sky Channel-TAB proposal also includes some Wednesday afternoon meetings and it would be expected the MGGC would accept that timeslot as well.

Neither the TAB or Sky Channel has ever covered a greyhound meeting in the South East South Australia and it will be a new era for the sport in Mount Gambier.

Discussions have been in place between Sky Channel and MGGC officials for some time and should it occur as early as next month, new tote outlets and an electronic semaphore board for the results, time, etc. will need to be installed at Tara Raceway.

“Everyone in the local greyhound industry seems for a new era of greyhound racing and all we are waiting on is the contract to be signed with Sky Channel,” Shepheard said.

It is antcipated that meetings will be run every fortnight on a Sunday starting at approximately 10.30 to 11am.

As a prelude to the predicted Sunday meetings with national coverage, the next two non-TAB meetings conducted by the MGGC will be raced on Sunday afternoons, June 13 and June 27.
