Stewards’ wrap – prominent trainer Darren Brown suspended

PROMINENT Victorian greyhound trainer and breeder Darren Brown has been suspended by Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) after one of his greyhounds returned an out of competition swab sample to a permanently banned substance.

The sample was taken from the greyhound Velobell at Brown's property and was found to contain the prohibited substance Dehydronorketamine when tested by the Racing Analytical Services Laboratory (RASL).

Brown was charged with a breach of GAR 79A (4)(i) which relates to greyhound being free of permanently banned substances.

Brown pleaded guilty to the charge and was suspended for a period of three months, two of which have been wholly suspended pending no further breaches of GAR 79A (4)(1) within the next 12 months.

Crawford faces RADB for 2015 offence

Registered trainer David Crawford faced the Victorian Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board () last Tuesday charged with a breach of two rules, namely GAR 83(1A) and GAR 83(2).

Crawford had allegedly administered (or caused to be administered) a prohibited substance to the greyhound Cruiser's Sol at Traralgon on December 12, 2015, with the greyhound consequently returning a positive urine sample to Cobalt.

Crawford pleaded guilty to both charges.

At the hearing Crawford gave evidence that he had injected the greyhound with Tripart the night before the race to assist relief of muscle cramping.

Upon considering all of the evidence, the RADB moved to disqualify Crawford's training licence for 15 months, 12 of which are suspended pending no further breaches of GAR 83 within the next 12 months.

Cruiser's Sol was also disqualified from the event in question.

Christine Haigh disqualified

Christine Haigh fronted the RADB earlier this month charged with a breach of GAR 83(2) after her greyhound Secret Colour returned a positive urine sample to Dehydronorketamine, a metabolite of Ketamine, when competing at Ballarat on January 24, 2016.

Haigh pleaded guilty to the charge, with evidence at the hearing suggesting the possible source of the positive swab was from the greyhound consuming knackery meat prior to the event in question.

The RADB subsequently disqualified Haigh for nine months, seven of which have been suspended for 12 months pending no further breaches of GAR 83 during that period.

Haigh's disqualification commenced on July 12, while Secret Colour was also disqualified from the event in question.

Jessie Fothergill to spend six months on the sidelines

Heathcote trainer Jessie Fothergill was recently the subject of a RADB hearing after her greyhound Comic Chez returned a positive urine sample to Testosterone and 5β-Androstane-3α, 17β-diol at a mass concentration greater than 10ng/ml.

Fothergill was slapped with two breaches.

The first was GAR 83 (1A) in that she administered or caused to be administered a prohibited substance to the greyhound Cosmic Shez at The Meadows on January 23, 2016.

The second charge was for a breach of GAR 83(2) for failing to present the greyhound Cosmic Shez free of a prohibited substance at The Meadows on the same date.

Fothergill pleaded guilty to both charges.

At the Fothergill admitted to injecting Cosmic Shez with Testoprop four days prior to the race at The Meadows which was the likely cause of the positive swab.

Upon considering all of the evidence, the RABD decided to impose a 12 month disqualification, six months of which has been wholly suspended for 12 months pending no further breaches of GAR 83 during that time.

Additionally, Cosmic Shez was also disqualified from the event in question.
