Classy Line Up For Puppy Championship Final

A classy field of chasers will contest the $5,800 Puppy Championship Final (452 metres) to be conducted at the NWGRC meeting at the Raceway on Tuesday.

Ace trainer of Penguin has Jethro (Head Bound – It's A She) for the rich event but concedes that, despite winning impressively on debut, he may struggle from his wide draw.

“He won his qualifying heat in 25.85 from the red box, but is still learning the ropes and probably better suited drawn in,” he explained this week.

“He is as good a pup as I have ever had, however several of his rivals are more experienced and I believe that they may have the advantage at this stage of their careers.”

Bred and raced by Devonport's Leigh Alexander, Jethro's dam It's A She ( – Iza Tora) won five of 15 lifetime outings and is a litter sister to the standout Mr. Metz, the winner of 19 of 35 starts including several Ones and stakes of in excess of $160,000.

Deverell also prepares Jethro's litter brother Beaudine, which contested the abandoned Heat 1 of the Puppy Championship on Tuesday afternoon.

Unfortunately the field caught the and a random draw saw Millie Grace (Paddy's Flame – Miss Bardi) and Stynes (Where's Pedro – Prestige Girl) gain a start in the Final, meaning that the highly rated Place Your Bet ( Cool – Billibev's Best) unfortunately missed the chance to further enhance his impressive record.

Millie Grace has subsequently been withdrawn from the event and replaced by the first emergency Lashing Jake ( – Jamella Sarah), an occupant of Alf Anderson's Mangalore kennel.

Mangalore mentor has a great chance of winning yet another feature with the well credentialed New Recruit, also a member of the Paddy's Flame – Miss Bardi litter.

The largest chaser in the field at 36.3 kg's, he won his Heat in impressive fashion from the red box and has once again been favoured by the draw.

Stringer was also seen in the winners circle at Tuesday's NWGRC meeting with the well performed Denersur (Black Enforcer – Miss Amberbee), which took out the Hankook Tyres Grade 4 (452 metres) event as a heavily supported $1.90 commodity.

Since being transferred from Victoria in June, the chaser has won four of his seven starts and is proving to be a very handy acquisition.

Veteran Burnie trainer Arnold Elphinstone took out the first race on the Devonport card with Wynburn Jet (Big Daddy Cool – Swift Azz), which came from a seemingly impossible position to win The Advocate (580 metres) event.

The chaser drew the red box but was shuffled back into the field mid-race, before storming home to record a great victory, his first in ten trips to the races.

Arnold and his brother Norm were very successful trainers several years ago, but in recent times the chore has been left to Arnold's family members, namely Arnold Junior and Sandra.
