Johnson Not Confident Of Breeders Classic Success

Leith greyhound trainer Gary Johnson has both Buckle Up Doug and Buckle Up Dozer for the rich Veterinary Hospital Final to be conducted at the Tote Racing Centre on Monday night, however he concedes that they will need luck in running to feature in the finish.

“My two will probably be the outsiders of the field, it is great that they have made it through, but it is hard to see them winning in such elite company,” he declared this week.

“We named Buckle Up Doug after my father who is a greyhound racing enthusiast and he will get a kick seeing his namesake contest the race, that's for sure.”

The Breeders Classic carries a first prize of $5,000, but also provides a breeders of an additional $4,500, meaning that Johnson and his wife Robyn would trouser $9,500 if either chaser were to greet the judge.

“I believe that the very smart chasers Bosco, Miki Moto Mike and Three Tradies are the top chances in a super field,” Johnson predicted.

The very well related Bosco, an occupant of 's Penguin kennel, ran 30.03 for the 515 metre trip in winning Semi-Final 3 at Monday night's LGRC meeting.

The Leigh Woods prepared Three Tradies was successful in a slightly slower 30.06, Buckle Up Doug led from the outset in 30.25 and Buckle Up Dozer and Miki Moto Mike dead-heated in 30.37.

To put the times into perspective, the and winner St. Pierre saluted the judge on the same programme in 30.03 in winning the Launceston Peugeot Invitation and the potential super-star Rybenbrook, sizzled to a 29.69 score in the first race on the card, the Launceston Mazda Juvenile.

Meanwhile the flying looks likely to enhance his already impressive record in the $6,000 Reg and Aileen Ivory Memorial Classic Final to be conducted at next Tuesday's NWGRC meeting at the Devonport Raceway.

Named in honour of Hall Of Famer Reg “Shorty” Ivory and his wife, the rich event is now a regular feature on the NWGRC calendar.

Three heats of the 452 metre event were conducted at Tuesday's NWGRC meeting and the Peter Phillips prepared Damek blitzed his opposition, winning by six lengths in a very fast 25.36.

The David Crosswell prepared I'm A Fencer was almost as impressive, winning his heat by three lengths in 26.44 and Adam's Daddy provided a boilover in the remaining heat, scoring by a length in 25.77.

Two of the sport were also seen in the winners circle at Tuesday's meeting, Larry Tanner winning The Advocate Juvenile Graduation Stake with Posh Larry and John Cameron the Hankook Tyres Stake with Barney's Beauty.

Having his first start over 580 metres, Posh Larry led for the majority of the race and in doing so upset a confident betting move for the runner up Chase The Shiraz.

Smart bitch Barney's Beauty, raced by the Oatlands based Dulverton Syndicate headed by former top footballer Murray Johnson, displayed her usual early dash to make it four wins from five trips to the races.
