Victorians Get The Devonport Spoils

Victorian chaser Compacto (Regal Brett – My Pearly Shells) ended the winning streak of the classy ( Cool – World's Finest) at the Raceway on Tuesday by taking out the rich Devonport Show Cup (452 metres) in brilliant fashion.

The Peter Phillips owned and prepared Damek was shooting for 13 victories in succession at the venue, but after missing the kick slightly could not match it with Compacto, which recorded a sizzling 25.31 in winning by six lengths.

Had Compacto not followed his customary trait of running wide on the corner, he may have given the great 's track standard of 25.13 a nudge.

Trained at by Judy Risk, won the $60,000 in May and has now won 18 of 36 lifetime outings and accumulated a purse of almost $90,000.

“We came to Tasmania for a holiday in the cool and have now picked up our petrol money,” handler Ray Gilmore declared when accepting the trophy.

Meanwhile another Victorian chaser to experience major success at the NWGRC meeting was the Brian Selleck prepared Cutting Corners (Big Daddy Cool – Token Excuse) which arrived in the last stride to take out the Betfair Final (452 metres).

The chaser recorded the time of 26.01 in defeating the Allison Walker prepared litter mates Magic Moss ( Big Daddy Cool – Marananga Moss) and Bluffy Lad, enhancing his record to three wins from eight starts and stakes of in excess of $8,000.

Wynyard trainer Scott Bryan, who played host to Selleck in Tasmania, accepted the trophy on behalf of connections and paid tribute to all those involved in the series.

“The last time I raced a dog in Tasmania was in 1993 when we were unsuccessful in our attempt to win the , but I may come back more often after this,” Selleck declared after the race.

“It was a rugged start, but fortunately for us a couple of the favourites were involved in it and he was able to produce his customary strong finish – it all fell into place for him.”

Smart chaser Penny's Angel (Collide – Ricky's Angel) was also successful at the NWGRC meeting, winning the Cripps Master Bread Grade 3 (452 metres) event in the time of 25.63.

The Terry Penny owned and prepared chaser is racing in super form, having defeated a field which included Damek at his previous run at Park.

Penny's Angel has now won 10 of 30 lifetime outings and stakes of almost $20,000 and will continue in that vein in coming weeks.

He is a litter-brother to the very smart Rewind, which is currently campaigning with great success in Victoria for veteran Bracknell owner – trainer Maurie Strickland.
