Watts Declares Pudzianowski His Fastest

Moorleah greyhound trainer Russell Watts, who has prepared several outstanding chasers in recent years, rates his latest find Pudzianowski ( – Petal) as the fastest he has had the pleasure of training.

In winning the Tote Racing Centre Grade 5 (515 metres) event at the LGRC meeting on Monday night by 10 lengths in the time of 29.42, went within an ace of smashing the champion 's track standard of 29.40 and set the greyhound world's tongues wagging.

“I believe he is the fastest I have prepared and believe it or not there may be a bit of improvement in him yet,” the trainer declared this week.

Raced by Victorian owners Greg Swan and and named after the five times World's Strongest Man, Polish born Mariusx Pudzianowski, the chaser has now won five of 10 lifetime starts and has a victory over the highly rated Rybenbrook () to his credit.

Prepared by at Mangalore, Rybenbrook has won 11 of 12 lifetime starts, his only defeat having been at the hands of Pudzianowski when the pair clashed at Park back in April.

“Admittedly the breaks went our way on that occasion, but that is what greyhound racing is all about,” Watts explained.

“I really believe that Podzianowski does not have the early speed of Rybenbrook, but may be stronger in the run home.”

Rybenbrook was also successful at the Tote Racing Centre on Monday night, winning the LST Veterinary Hospital Grade 4 (515 metres) event in the time of 29.49.

Russell Watts is enjoying a winning streak at the moment and is currently on top of the Tasmanian Trainers Premiership, despite preparing only a relatively small team.

“I have never won the premiership and probably never will do because I restrict my team to about ten greyhounds,” he explained.

Another kennel occupant to have struck a purple patch in recent weeks is the previously unreliable Bashy's Boy ( Surf Lorian – Shanlyn Lass), the winner of his four most recent outings and 10 of 30 lifetime.

Owned in Victoria by , the chaser was transferred to the Watts kennel in August last year and despite winning at his second Tasmanian outing at the Raceway, has taken time to really find his racing legs.

“Bashy's Boy has matured into a very handy chaser and I believe that in the future he will excel when given the opportunity to race over a bit of distance,” Watts explained.

The greyhound had his initial start over the distance on Tuesday afternoon at the Tote Racing Centre when he contested the Rodger Simmons Concrete Grade 5 event over 600 metres.

Quick to begin from the red box, he ran his rivals ragged as a raging $1.20 favourite, eventually scoring by eight lengths in the time of 34.85.

Pudzianowski will also be given the opportunity to race in distance events in coming weeks, meaning that the Watts kennel is likely to continue featuring in the winners circle at all venues.
