Aqualane Gets His Chance At Ballarat Wednesday

Aqualane gets the chance to break his maiden status in the Top Cat Video Maiden Final at Ballarat on Wednesday night.

From the Talbot kennel of Frances Matthysen, Aqualane produced an excellent run last week to advance to the final to be run over 550 metres.

On that occasion Aqualane finished two lengths behind the eventual winner Sir Kevin, even though he received a check in the running.

Aqualane (Regional Image-Andi Rose) has only been in Matthysen’s kennel since early May, but continues to improve with each run.

The South Australian bred and owned chaser was transferred to Matthysen’s care as there were more racing opportunities for him in Victoria.

His sire Regional Image was a prolific winner in South Australia, having notched up 27 wins and 21 placing’s from just 54 race starts.

Most of these wins were over a similar distance to the final, which indicates that Aqualane could well be a stayer in the making.

“He has plenty of ability and potential, and should get further than the 550 metre race distance in the future.” Matthysen said.

“Hopefully he will turn out to be handy stayer for the kennel.”

Aqualane will jump from Box 2 in the final.

The final is sure to be a hotly contested affair, with less than three lengths covering the eight runners on times posted in last week’s heats.

Matthysen said that Aqualane has had a tendency to be tardy out of the boxes, but is now jumping out with them.

“He has drawn particularly well in the race. If he can get a good run in transit he should be hard to beat in the final.”

The main dangers in an open race could well be last week’s heat winners Sir Kevin and Enough Detail.

Sir Kevin is from the Kangaroo Flat kennel of Herb Siakew.

Sir Kevin jumped out well from Box 3 last week, and was never headed in his all the way win.

The son of Primo Uno has drawn awkwardly in Box 7 for the final, but has the pace from the boxes which may help him keep out of any trouble on the first turn.

The Neville Tait trained Enough Detail has been placed in six of her nine race starts, and also gets her chance to break through.

She was only moderately out of the boxes last week and received a check in running, but was still good enough to win in the shadows of the post.
