Yuroke resident George Schofield was honoured yesterday with the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his almost 80-year commitment to the greyhound industry.

Mr Schofield has had a passion for greyhounds and greyhound racing all of his life and said he was humbled by the award.

“It was a bit of a surprise – you don't expect these things,” Mr Schofield said.

“It's something I've achieved over many years of more or less voluntary work.”

He has been on many racing boards over many decades, including Greyhound from 1966 to 1982, Greyhound Owners, Trainers and Breeders Association from 1958 to 1990 and Melbourne Greyhound Racing Association from 1982 to 1990, where he was director.

Mr Schofield has also been a Racing Club member since 1957, a Greyhound Racing Control Board Member from 1966 to 1982 and was a board member of the Greyhound Racing Club for 10 years.

He is a life member of the Greyhound Owners, Trainers and Breeders Association, Melbourne Greyhound Racing Association and Ballarat Greyhound Racing Club.

In addition to his time as a greyhound owner and trainer, Mr Schofield is also an animal chiropractor.

He had no formal training but said he got to know dogs and how to relieve their pain.

“I just got to know what to look for and where to press to give the little dogs a bit of relief,” he said.

At 90 years of age, Mr Schofield said he had “slowed down a little bit” but still kept up with what was going on in the greyhound racing world.

It was an honour to receive the award, he said.
