Bales Have A Night Out At Geelong Tonight

Greyhound punters often adopt the strategy, “When in doubt, back the Bale dog”.

All greyhounds raced by prolific New South Wales breeder have the word Bale in their names.

They race throughout Australia – many are trained in by , and – and are highly successful.

However, the “back the Bale dog” strategy takes on a new twist at Beckley Park tonight.

Seven of the eight starters in race one, the Lynette's Florist Maiden Final (457m), have the word Bale in their names.

, , Arleen Bale, Abner Bale, , Jonah Bale and Aurelia Bale will be matched against the Max Wintle-trained Menando in what shapes as a broadcaster's nightmare.

Racecaller didn't confuse any of the Bale names in the two debutant maiden heats last Monday when five Bales lined up in each race.

Trainer Graeme Bate has five Bales in the final and his stepson Peter Hunt has fastest heat winner Jaddua Bale and Aurelia Bale. Bate said nearly all the finalists were aged 21 months and had been in training for three months.

“Paul Wheeler bred about 260 greyhounds last year at his magnificent property at Young,” Bate said.

“He breaks them in and sends them down to us to sort out. Those that aren't up to Victorian class, which is the best in Australia, we send to Western Australia and South Australia.”

Bate said Wheeler's experiment in using a lot of American sires in recent years had failed.

“He has not had his usual high level of success and he's gone back to using the Australian sires and some from . He's got some very promising chasers on the way up,” Bate said.
