Darren Fisher Receives $1000 Fine Only For Flunixin Positive Swab In Victoria

The husband of high profile Greyhound and feature greyhound race presenter, Simone Fisher, has received a $1,000 fine for a positive swab to the powerful anti-inflammatory steroid, Flunixin.

Flunixin is a powerful anti-inflammatory used in horses and “downy” cattle, the most common source of 4-D meat or pet food grade meat. Flunixin contaminated meat has frequently been identified as a potential source of “accidental” in greyhounds.

Notwithstanding that, its use as a “lift” was prevalent amongst in the 80′s before today's stringent swabbing protocols came in to existence.

The sentence continues Victoria's soft approach to positive swabs to the drug which has seen fines only handed out, where as West Australian and South have delivered 7 month disqualifications and 5 month disqualifications for the same offence.

Following advice from the Racing Analytical Services Laboratory, the Stewards of Greyhound Racing Victoria conducted an investigation into the results of a pre-race urine sample taken from the greyhound Lektra Billy at the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club meeting on Thursday, 8th September, 2011.

During the investigation, Stewards heard evidence from registered Trainer Mr. Darren Fisher and received written statements from Dr. John Vine (Racing Analytical Services Laboratory) and Dr. (Sandown Veterinary Clinic).

After considering the evidence, Stewards charged Mr. Fisher with breach of Greyhounds Australasia Rule 83(2) and (3) in that he did fail to present the greyhound ‘Lektra Billy' free of any substance for an event at the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club meeting on Thursday, 8th September, 2011, given the pre-race urine sample taken from the greyhound indicated the presence of the prohibited substance Flunixin.

Mr. Darren Fisher represented himself at the Hearing.

Mr. Glenn Fish (GRV Chief ) represented the Stewards .

Mr. Fisher pleaded guilty to the charge.

After hearing all the evidence tendered, the RADB found Mr. Fisher guilty as charged and fined him $1,000.

Acting under GAR83(5), the RADB also disqualified Lektra Billy from Race 8 at the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club meeting held on Thursday, 8th September, 2011.
