JIMMY Newob (Cosmic Rumble x Nosey Rosey May '15) broke through for a deserved feature race win when saluting in Saturday's Group 2 Cup (485m).

The blue dog started from box one, barging his way along the fence in the early stages and leading throughout to defeat Group 1 Melbourne Cup winner Aston Dee Bee by four and a half lengths in a fast 27.07.

Although declaring his runner would have been better suited out wide last week, trainer Kel Greenough admitted box one worked wonders for his powerhouse performer.

“Box one probably ended up winning him the race,” Greenough told Australian Racing Greyhound.

“Out wide it looked like Aston Dee Bee got mixed up with one of the other dogs and we got a nice run up along the rail – it worked out well for us.”

Jimmy Newob took his earnings beyond $207,000 with the win, having now won 20 of his 44 starts with a further 16 placings.

He had been knocking on the door of a big race success, having previously run second in the 2017 Group 1 Harrison-Dawson, second in the 2018 Group 2 Cup, second in the Group 2 , third in the Listed Australian Sprint and qualifying for the 2017 Group 2 Ballarat Cup.

“He'd been close to winning a couple of big races, but it is hard to make these finals and even harder to win them,” Greenough said.

“He has been racing against the best virtually his whole career and I think some people wouldn't realise how hard that can be, especially for a young dog.

“A lot of the time it takes them a while to really find themselves, but he is doing that now. We have just got to hope he can keep doing so.”

Greenough said it was a rewarding win for his family and a special triumph for the dog's owners, Keith and John Bowen.

The brothers purchased Jimmy Newob as a pup from NSW using money their mother had left them when she passed away.

“It's great to see him get a group win – it was a big thrill for the owners who were very excited.

“They are people who dabbled into the dog game and they have come up with a very nice dog.

“You can go through 100 dogs and only end up with some ordinary ones – but luckily for them this bloke has got plenty of class about him.

“It is a lovely story – to have bought this dog with the money their mother left them, they'd be thinking of their mum every time this dog wins a race. It doesn't get any more special than that.

“Seeing them after the race is what it's all about.”

Greenough said Jimmy Newob will miss the upcoming Group 1 at Wentworth Park and will instead head to the NSW Hunter Valley for next month's Group 2 Maitland Cup (450m).

“I didn't nominate him for the Easter Egg – he would have had to go there without having seen the track and I thought that would be a big ask.

“If we had a bit more time between the series' I probably would have, but we will bypass that series and his next goal will be the Maitland Cup.”

Greenough knows what it takes to win a Maitland Cup, having won the event in 2014 with his former superstar Paw Licking ( x Mar '11).

“Paw Licking had a bit more early pace, but this bloke is stronger,” Greenough commented.

“There are going to be plenty of good dogs going for the race, so once again I think it is going to come down to a bit of luck.”

Heats of the Group 2 Maitland Cup will be held on April 5.
