The brilliant Kilty Lad recorded his second Group victory in as many months after a sensational 29.66 win in the Group 1 AJS Silver Chief over 525 metres at The Meadows on Saturday night.
The son of Superman and Sisco Train jumped perfectly from his awkward draw of five, sizzling to the first split in 5.07, with the well-supported Perfect Fancy moving into second position as they raced down the back.
In top gear, Kilty Lad extended his lead as he reached the second split (17.69), and as they turned for home, the $50,000 winner’s cheque was safely in his keeping, racing away to win by three and three quarter lengths over Perfect Fancy, stopping the clock just .05 outside Turanza Bale’s 29.61 time standard at the track.
Trainer Darren McDonald finished with both the silver and bronze with roughie Rumble Missile ($41) running third, 13 lengths behind the deserved winner.
Favourite Sir Prize ($2.30) found trouble on the first turn and finished fourth.
Kilty Lad’s victory capped off an amazing two months of racing for the Kellie Bravo-trained star, competing in no less than four Group finals, including the Group 3 South Australian Derby (8th), the Group 3 Young Star Classic (1st), the Group 1 Hobart Thousand (6th) and tonight’s amazing Group 1 AJS Silver Chief success.
From 25 starts, Kilty Lad has finished first past the post on 16 occasions, with his recent win pushing his prizemoney to over $118,000.
The two-year-old will now target the rich Australian Cup Carnival at The Meadows, which kicks off on February 19 with heats of the Group 1 MTD Australian Cup and invitation-only events including The Temlee, The Rookie Rebel and The Zoom Top, which are all sponsored by Macro Meats.
Kilty Lad was last week named as one of 16 greyhounds that will be automatically seeded through to the semi finals of the Group 1 Adelaide Cup.
