Pint-Size Powerhouse Alex Shiraz Is Overdue For A Win

Parwan chaser Alex Shiraz has her chance to break through for an overdue win in the Davis Wholesale Maiden at Ballarat on Wednesday night.

Trained by Ray Punshon, the tiny 23 kilo pocket dynamo will be having her fifth race start.

“She was the smallest of the twelve in the litter, but she has certainly got no fear and tries her heart out when she races.” Punshon said.

The Punshon family bred, and also race the litter, which is by local sire Bombastic Shiraz out of the dam Miss Itch.

Alex Shiraz ran a great race last week to be just beaten by Calm Presence over the 450 metre race distance.

On that occasion she exited Box 2, but tonight will jump from an awkward Box 6 draw.

“We would have preferred to draw closer to the rails, but with luck in running she will still be a great chance for a break through win.” he said.

Of the twelve in the litter, only a few have so far ventured to the track.

Mitchell’s Miss is currently the star of the large litter, having won two races at Sandown before being injured.

Alex Shiraz will tonight contest the last of four maiden heats on the program.

She presents great value for punters at her luxurious pre post odds of 12/1.

First and second placed greyhounds from the heats will advance to the maiden final to be run next Wednesday night.

Hardest for Alex Shiraz to beat in her heat could well be Wicked Jack from Box 5, and Racy Rachel from Box 7.

Meanwhile, Essex Girl for Clunes trainer Cliff Danaher will also be looking to advance a final of her own when she contests heat three of the Carmichael/Howell Grade 5 on the program.

Essex Girl has drawn the coveted Box 1 in her heat, and has all the credentials to run a forward race.

Essex Girl’s only three wins have been at her home track of Ballarat. She has been thereabouts of late and was a close up third last week behind Budeful.

She will step up in distance to the 550 metres from her last start.

Essex Girl has had six starts at the track and distance so far for four minor placing’s, so she is due for a change of luck.

Hardest for her to beat will be Total Token from Box 4, and Ceejay’s Slinky from Box 7.
