Proven Nitro Set To Continue Thompson’s Silver Chief Dominance
The brilliant Proven Nitro still looks the greyhound to beat in the Group 1 AJS Silver Chief final – worth $100,000 to the winner – despite drawing box six over the 525-metre classic next Saturday night.
The son of Nitro Burst and Proven Cobalt had an enthralling battle with fellow young gun Renegade Chief in yesterday's semi final, with the two matching motors before Proven Nitro strode clear to score in a Best of Night 29.98. Victory for Proven Nitro on Saturday would push his prizemoney to over $310,000 and give Jason Thompson back-to back Silver Chief wins (and his sixth overall) in a race recently dominated by the Pearcedale trainer.
The Kel Greenough-trained Renegade Chief will be out to spoil the party after drawing favourably in box two, with his second-placed effort last night meaning the black chaser has not missed a place in his first 18 starts. Allen Makoto (box eight) is also an obvious danger, coming from a wide draw in last night's semi to score in 30.06, making it six wins from seven starts in an amazing start to his career.
Saturday night's winner will join an illustrious group of chasers who have won the black-type event, including Black Diro, Chariot Supreme, Ginger, Kantarn Bale and former track record holder Big Daddy Cool.
