Jason Thompson Brings Some Magic To Warrnambool

Black Magic Opal proved just how fast he is again at Warrnambool last night, smashing the 4/5 Grade field he was up against as well as the 450 metre track record while he was at it.

The sleek black speed machine only began evenly from box six, but once he hit the ground he showed the terrific pace that we have all come to expect from the son of Magic Sprite and Awesome Opal. Once he was in front, nothing was going to catch the Jason Thompson-trained chaser as he sped away to score by over twelve lengths in a blazing 24.87s- 0.09s quicker than the previous track record set by Omar Gee in April this year.

Black Magic Opal seems to have come back bigger and better than ever after being sidelined in July with a fractured metatarsal which was sustained during his run in a semi-final of the Group 1 Maturity Classic. After two months on the sidelines spectators were skeptical as to whether he would return as good as what he was- those thoughts have put to rest with Black Magic Opal now winning five from five since returning. Since making his comeback, the 31 kilogram dog has also set a new track record at Geelong- clocking 25.11s over the 460 metre dash when taking out the Group 2 Geelong Cup.

Thompson-trained chasers now hold two track records at Warrnambool, with the talented Ronan Izmir holding the 390 metre record of a sizzling 21.735s

Black Magic Opal now boasts the ominous record of 31 starts from which he has notched up 24 wins and four minor placings. The dual group winner looks primed and in perfect order to tackle the upcoming Group 1 Melbourne Cup- the next likely target for the freakish creature.
