Warragul Greyhounds Receive $1.9Million Overhaul

The future of the Greyhound Racing Club has been secured thanks to a $1.9 million Brumby Labor Government and racing industry funding boost to redevelop the facility.

Deputy Premier and Racing Minister today visited Logan Park to announce the redevelopment that will provide major track upgrades and key water saving measures.

“This major redevelopment of the Warragul Greyhound Racing Club is another example of how our Government is delivering the biggest investment in rural and regional racing venues in Victoria's history,” Mr Hulls said.

“We understand how important racing is to regional and rural communities which is why the Brumby Labor Government is taking action to promote Victoria's racing industry by investing in the future of our regional race clubs.”

Mr Hulls said highlights of the major redevelopment included:

  • An extension of the track from 589 metres to 630 metres;
  • A new storm water harvesting and irrigation system;
  • A new lighting system with drop down light poles;
  • A new rail;
  • A new catching pen gate with improved safety padding;
  • Two new sets of starting boxes;
  • A new winning post.

Mr Hulls said the Brumby Labor Government had provided $1.3 million to the project as part of the $86 million Regional Racing Infrastructure Fund, while Greyhound had committed just over $560,000 to the project.

clubs are feeling the effects of the longest drought in our history and this new project will provide some significant water savings thanks to the installation of a storm water harvesting system that will reduce the track's reliance on potable water,” he said.

Mr Hulls said Greyhound Racing Victoria had also provided funding for the installation of a water irrigation system for more efficient track watering.

“This project is a fine example of what local clubs, the racing industry and the Government can achieve when working in partnership to support the Victorian racing industry,” he said.

The has committed $45 million for major infrastructure and capital improvements at regional and rural racing venues, while the industry has contributed $41 million.

Member for Eastern Victoria Matt Viney said the redevelopment was a major boost for Warragul.

“This new redevelopment not only provides a boost to the racing club, owners and trainers, but to the Warragul community who continues to have access to a key community facility,” Mr Viney said.

Mr Viney said key stakeholders, including the Warragul Greyhound Racing Club and greyhound industry representatives, were consulted to ensure the new track met all safety standards.

The project is due to be completed in February 2010 and during construction of the new track the majority of race meetings scheduled for Warragul will be held at other venues in Gippsland.
