Williams hopeful ‘Harry’s Hero’ can deliver Sale Cup success

DESLEY Williams says she will be ‘over the moon' if Inequity (Dashing Corsair x Velocity Zip Jan '15) can cause an upset in the (650m) on .

Williams owns Inequity – affectionately known as ‘Hero' – which is trained by her good friends and Ben Divirgilio at Nambrok.

The red fawn dog led his heat from box five on Sunday before being challenged by Royal Intention ( x Uno Lesson Mar '15) down the back. The two went stride for stride in the run to the line with Royal Intention finishing too strong in 37.87.

Williams wasn't disappointed with the run which was Inequity's first run back after a two week freshen-up.

“He was in a final at The Meadows on a heavy track and it took a lot out of him so Lyn and Ben gave him a bit of a break leading into the Cup heats,” Williams said.

“I think he can get a bit of improvement out of the run [on Sunday] and he should give them a good show next week even though he has box six.”

Inequity has been a great money spinner, winning 16 of his 39 starts and almost $50,000 in prize money.

He started his career in SA for but made the move to Victoria in June after it was decided he would be suited racing on a range of different tracks. The 35-kilogram powerhouse is a very special dog to Williams, being by her former champion racer Dashing Corsair (Malfoy x Rose Fla-menco Apr '07) which was a group 1 winner over the sprint and staying distances.

Sadly, Dashing Corsair – or ‘Harry' – passed away four years ago. Thankfully Williams had some straws set aside and was able to acquire a suitable brood bitch.

She is now hoping Inequity can emulate his father by winning at the highest level when he lines up in the Sale Cup against million-dollar greyhound Fanta Bale (David Bale x Ucme Typhoon Aug '14) and Melbourne Cup runner-up Chasin' Crackers ( x Lady Arko Aug '15).

“It means the world to me to have one of Harry's pups – that I own – in a big final like this.

“He has got big shoes to fill and he will be racing some very good dogs in the final, but I already couldn't be prouder of him.

“Win or lose it doesn't matter – just to have him in there is a big thrill.”

Williams is keeping busy, running a successful whelping business in Queensland which she says she owes to Dashing Corsair.

“Harry taught me so much – when he was in the big races I did a lot of travelling with him and I wouldn't be doing what I am doing today if it wasn't for him.

“When I lost him I wasn't sure if I was going to stay in dogs – I had six months off but I was bored to tears. I ended up buying Ian and Kerry Hoggan's place and they bought mine and since then I haven't looked back.

“Even though Harry isn't around anymore I like to think I am carrying on his legacy. It's a lot of work but I just love it.”

As for the final, Williams believes her charge is a rough chance of snaring the prize if he can find the early lead. Perhaps there is an omen on her side.

“Harry won his first group 1 off box six and they never gave him a chance – but I knew if he jumped and was up there early that he would be hard to beat and he proved me right.

“Hopefully Hero can do the same.”

The Group 1 Sale Cup is worth $75,000 to the winner and will be run on Boxing Day.
