Leading WA Greyhound Trainer Retires

According to a story by Ernie Manning in The West Australian, WA greyhound trainer has stunned the local greyhound community by announcing he is retiring from greyhound training to become a house husband.

The 37-year-old Lee, who has won 17 feature events and regularly finished in the top three of trainers' premierships since moving from New South Wales to West Australia about 8 years ago.

During that tenure as atrainer Lee has trained greyhounds the calibre of Lara Flynn, Twain and Dimples and Ice, as well as current kennel start Bennno and .

But it was just a few days ago on the eve of the that Lee announced his intentions.

“Lara Flynn, Twain and Dimples And Ice have won a string of major races for me,” Lee said. “But I've yet to win a WA Derby and this will be my last chance.

“I'm retiring and there won't be a comeback. My partner, Madelaine Kelly, has as a high school teacher and I'll become a Mr Mom to our three sons, aged from 11 to four.

“I want to concentrate full-time on family life. If I continue training greyhounds, I'll insist on giving them thorough preparations and that's very time consuming.”

The Australian-born Lee, whose parents migrated from Hong , trained greyhounds as a hobby when he shifted to WA eight years ago.

“I had only three or four greyhounds at first,” he said. “But now there are 20 in my kennel. I'll ensure good trainers take over my team, including Benno and Sydney Vella.”

Lee started two runners in the Group 2 event Saturday night finishing fifth with Benno and Sydney Vella ran last behind aspiring Queenlsland superstar in a quick 30.29sec for the 530m Cannington journey.

Lee jointly holds the WA record for the most winners at a single race meeting with 6 wins on the one card. Joining him for that record are WA legends , who has performed the feat 3 times and Grant Langston who had done it twice.
