Star Recall aiming to shine second time around in Mandurah Cup

NIGHT owls are in for a treat this Friday with the Cup, which is set to jump at 11:27pm AEDT.

Run over the 490 metre trip, the current $2.50 favourite is 's Tureaud, which comes into the event following on from his impressive 27.34 heat performance last week.

The talented chaser will have to contend with box five, a draw from which he is yet to salute. However, he has been in nice form since resuming from a four month spell, with two wins from three starts including a slick 27.22 over the track and trip.

Also in contention is Star which dropped back from a successful stint over the 647 metre distance with a solid second in her heat last week.

The daughter of High Recall and No Recall had a slight freshen up prior to her qualifier, but had no luck in running when striking trouble as she was about to go to the lead in the back straight.

The black bitch again lost momentum when she changed stride swinging for home after regaining the top spot and was grabbed right on the line by Crashing Packs, a $6.50 shot with William Hill to take out the feature.

Despite the defeat, Star Recall, which will exit box six, brings the class factor to the event.

Co-owner Kevin Dover is hoping for more luck in 2015, with Star Recall defeated in last year's as the odds-on favourite.

“This time last year she was the $1.10 favourite, but another dog stood on her back legs and dragged her down and after that it was all over,” Dover said.

“Hopefully we have a better result this time around.”

Star Recall has been a mighty racer for , winning 33 races from 58 starts with a further 11 minor placings.

The 27 kilogram chaser returned to her home state earlier this year after a successful Victorian campaign under the tutelage of which saw her take out the Sale Cup on Boxing Day 2014.

At her second last start in Victoria, the bonny bitch took a nasty fall in the Group 1 final at The Meadows. Now trained by Chris Halse, it took Star Recall a few runs back home for her to recapture some of her best form.

Dover said that it was a tough road getting her back to the track, with an injury sustained in the fall keeping her sidelined for almost three months.

“It has been a bit of a long road – it took a good five or six months after her fall at The Meadows for her to get back (to where she is now).

“When she came back (to WA) she had a couple of runs over the 490 just to build up her fitness to get her back over the middle distance, but it took her a little while to get her confidence back again after the fall.”

Star Recall regained her lost confidence once she stepped up in trip and has now won four of her last six starts.

Despite being run over the sprint trip, Dover is confident that Star Recall will put in a good performance this week in the final, with the draw being their biggest worry.

“Box six is a concern – it would be better if she was drawn wider – but there is not too much pace on her outside which should give her a bit of room to move early.

“She was a bit unlucky in her heat… Chris said she was a bit sore after the run following on from the knock, so hopefully she can get out of box six alright this week and she will improve.”

If Star Recall is anywhere near her best on Friday night she will take a power of beating, with her personal best of 27.12 over the trip just four one hundredths off the .

Star Recall will take her career earnings to a massive $334,475 if successful and is currently the $5.50 third elect with Sportsbet.
