WORM Burner has upstaged one of the hottest fields assembled at Angle Park in recent memory to claim Group 1 National Championship final (515m).
Punters rallied around Victorian superstar Zambora Brockie from the ideal rails draw, sending the dual group 1 winner to the traps as the $1.45 top elect. However, when the lids flew open local hope Worm Burner was able to outpace the black speed machine in the run to the line on the first occasion, rolling to the front of the pack and kicking clear.
Once on the bunny it was a case of times and margins, with the son of Oaks Road and Little Looper sprinting to the line to score by five and three quarter lengths over Zambora Brockie in an airborne 29.17.
Western Australian chaser Times Square (box seven) filled the trifecta back in third position, eight and one quarter lengths off the winner.
Worm Burner has now won 28 of his 43 starts including his last 11 in succession, with Saturday’s triumph taking his career earnings over $164,000.
Trained by Cameron Butcher, the brindle dog is the first South Australian chaser to claim the National Sprint Championship, made up from greyhounds representing all states around the country, since Casino Tom won the 1993 edition of the feature.
