$1.9 Million Warragul Track Brings The Greyhounds Back

Greyhound racing has officially returned to after the completion of a $1.9 million racetrack redevelopment, Deputy Premier and Minister for Racing said tonight at Logan Park.

Mr Hulls said the completed upgrade of the track and other racing facilities had significantly modernised Logan Park's racing setup and highlighted Warragul's prominence within the sport.

“This upgrade of facilities at Logan Park not only improves the racetrack itself but will also minimise interference and injuries to dogs during races and trials,” he said.

“High quality racing infrastructure is the cornerstone of a strong market and, in addition, the safety of competing greyhounds, spectators and everyone involved in race day preparations is absolutely vital to the ongoing health of Victoria's greyhound racing industry.

“As well as the track upgrade, which has increased the circumference and width of the racing surface, the project also provided a new rail, lighting system and various other improvements to the racing infrastructure.”

Mr Hulls said planning for the project had also considered a number of environmental concerns, such as water use, before the redevelopment began.

“The upgrade of this track has also included the installation of a water recycling system capable of saving about eight million litres of water every year,” Mr Hulls said. “With Warragul racing about 90 times a year, this system will see a marked improvement in the efficiency of track watering.”

The Brumby Labor Government contributed more than $1.3 million to the project and Greyhound (GRV) contributed the remaining $565,000.

The Government's funding was part of the $86 million Regional Racing Infrastructure Fund, which it established jointly with the racing industry.

Member for Narracan Gary Blackwood said Logan Park was an integral part of Warragul's sporting community, hosting greyhound and harness races, but also providing a home for other groups.

“About 25,000 greyhounds, their owners and trainers use these facilities each year along with other groups such as and the Agricultural Society,” Mr Blackwood said.

Upper house member for Eastern Victoria Matt Viney said: ”The redevelopment of the track and other racing facilities at Logan Park ensures that more than 60 years of greyhound racing at Warragul is secured for many years to come.”

GRV chief executive said the new state-of-the-art track was a real plus for all greyhound racing participants, including the hundreds of trainers living in the Gippsland region.

“The new track lends itself to a style of racing that will produce minimal interference meaning it will not only benefit our punters, but also our racing greyhounds,” Mr Stephens said.
