2024 Group 1 National Distance Championship set for thrilling finale
The 2024 Group 1 National Distance Championship state finals were run and won in all six Australian states on Thursday night, August 9, 2024.
While New Zealand did hold qualifying heats, they will need to overcome air-freight bans on greyhounds to race in the final, so the 2024 National Distance Championship final will most likely be made up of the six winners plus two wildcards.
South Australia will provide both the reserves for the final.
In 2024, the Northern Territory was excluded from the race and was not permitted to hold a qualifying series for either the National Sprint Championship or the National Distance Championship.
The six 2024 National Distance Championship state final qualifiers are:
- Zinfandel Truce – Gavin Harris – SA
- Valpolicella – Tony Zammit – QLD
- West On Boonie – Chris Halse – WA
- Raider’s Guide – Gary Fahey – TAS
- Aunt Virginia – John Paraskevas – VIC
- Ritza Piper – Joe Scerri – NSW
The Greyhound Club Australia (GCA – formerly AGRA) 2024 Nationals criteria allows for the rest of the field to be made up of wildcards that they have seeded and ranked themselves.
The two remaining greyhounds to make up the final field are determined by using the GCA’s wildcard rankings.
Although not formally announced, the two wildcard greyhounds to be added to the 2024 Group 1 National Distance Championship final should be, in order:
- Fahey’s Magic – Tyson Barton – NSW
- Drill Sergeant – Shane Drummond – VIC
Both greyhounds ran in their respective state finals.
