2024 Group 1 National Distance Championship: The final word

The 2024 Group 1 will be run and won as race six on tonight’s greyhound racing meeting on Saturday, August 24.

In contrast to the National Straight Track Championship, the greyhound betting odds around the National Distance final have been very calm since markets opened on Monday.

Online bookmakers and greyhound punters have supported the 2024 VIC National Distance Champion, Aunt Virginia, into +240 race favourite after opening as the +270 second favourite.

In contrast, early race favourite Valpolicella has drifted from a +250 race favourite out to being +320 equal second favourite with Raider’s Guide.

Once Tasmanian representative, Raider’s Guide’s 33.86 595 metre trial at Angle Park was brought to the attention of punters, the Gary Fahey-trained greyhound was backed in from an opening quote of +500 to be an equal second favourite with Queenslander Valpolicella at +320.

Similarly, local 2024 SA National Distance Champion has continued to find support at the best Australian greyhound betting sites, being backed in from +1400 to now be a +850 chance in tonight’s $85,000 to-the-winner final.

All other greyhounds in tonight’s Group 1 final have drifted out from their National Distance Championship greyhound betting opening quotes.

has drifted from +1400 out to +1600, West Australian representative West On Boonie has drifted from +380 out to +500, Fahey’s Magic has drifted from +800 out to +1100, and has drifted from +500 out to +600.

2024 National Distance Championship Ratings

Looking at the 2024 Group 1 National Distance Championship with the benefit of the proprietary greyhound ratings alongside, the three greyhounds at the top of the market are all over bet.

While the ratings agree that Victorian greyhound Aunt Virginia is deserving of her place at the top of the market, all three greyhounds, including Valpolicella and Raiders’s Guide, are under the odds needed to get involved.

The two best betting opportunities present in the 2024 Group 1 Distance final are Greyhound Clubs Australia (GCA) wildcard runner, Fahey’s Magic, and WA National Distance Champion West On Boonie.

Despite being backed in from +1400 to +850, SA National Distance Champion, Zinfandel Trace still represents value at that shorter quote and has more upside potential than all the other finalists.
