3 Months And $500 Fine For Cortico-Steroid Positive Swab

have just released details of a positive swab in a greyhound to the drug Betamethasone.

Betamethasone is a mildly potent cortico-steroid that is frequently used for its anti-inflammatory properties in topical applications that often also contain an antibiotic.

Greyhound Queensland Stewards convened an on the 17th January 2009 in relation to the urine sample taken from the greyhound which competed on the 16th of October 2008 at the Rockhampton Greyhound Racing Club in Race 5 (placed 5th) and subsequently returned positive to the drug Betamethasone.

Stewards directed Trainer Mr. of Rockhampton to appear.

Evidence was taken from Mr. Allan Svensen, Club Mr. J. Lippett along with a number of written submissions.

The Inquiry was subsequently adjourned to seek further information sought by Mr. Svensen.

The Inquiry reconvened on Monday the 23rd of February.

Stewards charged the Trainer under R 83 (2) (a) (d) which states;

    (2) The owner, trainer or person in charge of a greyhound
  • (a) nominated to compete in an Event
  • (d) shall present the greyhound free of any drug

Mr. Svensen pleaded not guilty.

Mr. Svensen was found guilty as charged.

Mr. Svensen was Suspended for 3 months and fined $500.

Stewards disqualified the greyhound Little Itallian under R 83 (4) from Race 5 (placed 5th) at the Rockhampton Greyhound Racing Club meeting on the 16th of October 2008.
